Hey y’all,
I am wondering if I should aim for the prep school (USMAPS/MMI/NMI) before West Point.
Coming out of high school, I have no military back ground in my family and no military experience, and not much technical military knowledge so I feel that this would put me behind in West Point. What do you think?

Thanks.

One does not need a military family or military background to excel at West Point. If West Point deems you worthy of an offer of appointment, then they've determined that you have what it takes, regardless of your experience. In fact, most cadets do not have a military background. USMAPS is generally reserved for candidates who would benefit from additional academic preparation but otherwise have stellar qualifications.

Prep school is mostly for academics and not for technical abilities. I don't think you can aim for prep school since you can't apply there. My RC said that you must be academically disqualified from USMA in order to qualify to be selected for prep.

You do not need military experience or military knowledge to be admitted to WP. They will teach you everything you need to know.
You cannot apply to USMAPS, they have to offer it.

USMAPS is West Point's prep school. MMI/NMI, etc are private prep schools - I'm not very familiar with them, but believe they are geared to students that were not appointed on the first try.

Many at USMAPS are soldiers and recruited athletes that need additional academic preparation. Yes, it is correct that a candidate must be academically disqualified for USMA to be considered for USMAPS. As always, there may be exceptions.

Most of an incoming class is straight out of high school, but there are many with prior college or prep school backgrounds.

Oh okay— I was thinking that they focused mainly on West Point history/regulations and such during BEAST and as a 4th class cadet. Thank you for the info.

Wow, I never knew that— always thought the prep school was if an applicant was slightly behind on 1 aspect of their app. Thanks for the new info.

USMAPS was started to help active duty soldiers who had spent a few years in the Big Army transition back to a school house environment. It has evolved into also training athletes and other valued candidates who may need some additional academic preparation before attempting to tackle the four year process. You have to be Disqualified to be considered for USMAPS.

The Civilian Prep schools are basically Military Junior Colleges that focus on the entire military experience. The academies sponsor around 50 candidates each year at these schools and many more attend for other reasons. Results for sponsored prep candidates are very good, close to 100%. Results for non-sponsored candidates is mixed and not really known. Their is no way to take the published data and make any conclusions.

While saying "most" of the class comes straight from high school is technically correct, 25-30% of each incoming class have at least one year of post high school education.

Thank you— This is great solid info. !

Aim for the stars! Push yourself to achieve an appointment to West Point. The experience of completing your file is a true test of grit. Work hard, finish strong and keep improving yourself over the next 6-7 months in academics and fitness. If you reach the moon and get a sponsorship to prep school it is still a win. You can do it!!

Love the positivity <3
