My DS just received a request for an AMI from the orthodontist for his braces. DS stated on the questionnaire that his braces come off this Wednesday, September 4th and will only have a retainer to use at night.

I will take off work and go see the orthodontist to get part B filled out tomorrow, but this seems silly to me.

No need to take off work at all. I would suspect the AMI says something to the effect of “will need to be signed”, etc. September 4th is only a few days away, simply have your son take it with him. No need for you to do any of this.

Doesn’t seem silly at all to me. DODMERB is making medical determinations for thousands and thousands of candidates as qualified (or not) to attend a service academy. They can’t just take your DS’s word for it. To avoid this “silly” AMI, DS could have waited until the braces were off before scheduling his medical exam. Then there wouldn’t be an AMI.

Something to consider for future applicant readers.

This was a paper my son’s orthodontist filled out and emailed back to me. They just had to state how long the retainer would be worn and such. Hopefully it won’t take long for DoDMERB to update after they receive yours.

Fortunately for us, my son had that paper in hand with him when he went to his DoDMERB exam because he hadn’t had his braces off yet either.
