Good news!

Two students who had not been selected to attend the Naval Academy Summer Seminar this past summer were presented with LOA’s at the first round of Candidate Visitation Weekends; a nice gift to bolster the confidence of those remaining for the ‘Big Wait’.

YEAH! I saw that I was so surprised that they are giving out LOAs already!

I think that's pretty neat that they do that during CVWs. Neat for the recipients, anyway. All the others are thinking "Dang, I wish that was me".

Oh goodie...every time it appears that we've managed expectations about LOA's here, someone goes out and publicly presents the LOA -- now everyone applying is going to running to mailbox , wondering why they didn't get theirs ! Here's a hint -- don't expect it ! An LOA is a pleasant surprise, but is really meaningless. You still need need a Nom and pass Medical --or whatever other conditions are identified on the LOA. Remember, the goal is Appointment, not a feel good letter that says you will be appointed if A...B....C.

Any and all of the students who will gain appointment to the class of 2024 could easily have found their way to a top 20 college. The competition between these colleges for the top tier students is fierce; ask a prospective mid today how many brochures, e-mails, phone calls they receive from schools on a daily basis and you’ll have all the evidence you need. The LOA is about managing expectations and its leverage is being used to attract and retain the highest caliber talent. As long as colleges continue to live and die by comparisons of their students SAT range and the percentage accepted from the total pool of applicants you’ll continue to see the academy’s need for LOA’s.

I am well aware of the rationale behind LOA's...but the Service Academies should be looking for something more than other colleges. Times have changed, and they are less the "Not College" than ever before.

From my DS's experience, this is not true. My DS did not receive an LOA (had is app completed in late August). He was 800M 760E, Eagle Scout, 2 sport varsity letter, all-section pitcher, top 5% of class, etc, etc etc. He got an offer of appointment the end of Feb, like just about everyone else who received offers (and it was the greatest day of his life). But he was rejected by Notre Dame, Northwestern, and Michigan. Perfect (or near perfect) SAT and all the other secret academic/EC sauce does NOT trigger an LOA or get you in to top 20 schools. There is a hell of a lot of luck involved, and uncontrollable factors, starting with your location and socioeconomic background.

I’m sure this question has been asked before but I can’t seem to find the answer... do appointments usually come through mail, the portal, or by phone call? I can’t help but check the candidate portal twice a day knowing how early it is in the overall process.

You may/may not first be notified your nominating source. The Academy will usually notify members of Congress of those candidates from their slate who will receive an appointment. This allows the MOC (or their staff) to notify you prior to the Academy officially notifying you--some do/some don't.

On the Academy side, you should receive an e-mail stating there is an update in your CIS (portal). Log in and your appointment will be in there. The days of 'paper' notification are long gone, but you still receive a nice certificate announcing your appointment that does come in the mail, but not until much later. No need to check your portal 2x/day unless you truly enjoy that type of agony. It is still quite early in the cycle.

Best of luck to you...
