Army @ Michigan

2018
Army 21 Oklahoma(#5) 28 OT

2019
Army 21 Michigan(#7) 24 OT

Just a couple of skill players away from beating top 10 teams.

Army seems like they are bringing it, this year. Good for them.

Was REALLY hoping for Army to pull it out. But the fact they took UM to 2 OTs, is a victory.

IMO, it's really hard for the underdog to prevail in the college OT system. The need to keep scoring when you're smaller, less talented, don't have quick score ability via the pass, and often don't have a great FG kicker favors the favorite, so to speak. One notable exception was USNA's OT victory over ND about a decade ago. But it's the exception, not the norm, and usually requires some luck.

Sloppy, sloppy play by Michigan. Could not keep hold of the ball. Credit to Army for knocking that ball out a few times and for playing tough. Michigan better clean it up A LOT before they start seeing Notre Dame, Michigan State, Ohio State.

Hate to be rude, but Army cant pass if their lives depended on it. Although I must say they played one hell of a game and Michigan got lucky

Service Academies never pass the ball. I think it's a rule. It's like they haven't heard of Pop Warner.

That’s not their game plan. Incomplete passes kill the clock and SA offense is based upon controlling the clock and keeping the other team’s offense off the field.

I think I would have a heart attack if we ever started consistently throwing the ball

except that is modern football. Sometimes you run and sometimes you throw and when you get to the last 5 minutes of the game and you are losing or tied, you throw like crazy

Wouldn’t it be great if the SAs played a style and system that perfectly matched their mission? Army would run a ground-bound, smash-mouth, triple-option offense that grinds out long, tedious drives. Air Force would use a pass-happy, air-raid, bombs-away offense that emphasizes the quick strike. And Navy would...well...hmmm...need to rethink this one.

Long slow drives and then pass like crazy in the red zone?

D1 football is the feeder for the NFL and today the average D linemen in the NFL is over 300 lbs. The SA's have a tough enough time getting linemen down to commissioning standards after their firstie season. There is no way they can have linemen, offense or defense, who will be as big as those on top D1 teams while still meeting their missions as SA's. The offenses fun by the SA's are in place as it's about the only offense that can be competitive with lighter offensive linemen, especially a pass-happy game that would require consistently maintaining a pocket. In addition, they run an offense that most D1 programs won't face so they have a tough time preparing against them.
