Unfortunately, my 4.0 will drop to a 3.9 due to getting an A- in CCP calculus. My grading scale only goes up to a 4.0, thus my class rank will go from 1st to around 11th. Will this significantly affect my chances of admission or competitiveness? I emailed the teacher and she said she will not offer extra credit or round my grade up in any way. I understand this class is a college class and considered harder than normal so I’m trying not to stress too much, but still concerned that my class rank will seem to drop greatly.

Mathematically it is hard for me to wrap my head around an A- dropping class rank from 1 to 11.

Unless 10 others have a perfect 4.0 cumulative average throughout high school.

From everything I have read, it should not affect your competitiveness. As long as you are continuing to push yourself and take difficult class and maintaining good grades, you should be just fine.

Yes my class for some reason is very smart. We have around 10 “tied” as valedictorians with a 4.0. I’m not sure why my school grades like this I think they are changing it next year

USMA is factoring in GPA over class rank now due to the fact that not as many schools rank anymore (at least that’s what I gather from information I’ve come across as well as messages on the portal). You’re in really good shape, especially if that’s your unweighted GPA

Is it a competitive school? My son was valedictorian and had to get like an 85 average his last two semesters to lose it.

And his top ten included several Ivy’s, MIT, USNA, USMA, and RPI. Bunch of 1500+ SATs. Was one of the best classes to graduate ... it was more an anomaly.

I wouldn’t call it competitive as much as your sons. We have a lot of kids who take college classes compared to others who take only high school classes. Whether they are in college or regular, if they get all A’s, then they get a 4.0. Most people don’t see it fair due to the difficulty of college classes compared to regular high school classes, but it’s something I have to live with.

orry I don’t mean to seem braggy or anything, I’m just that person in school
Haha Just a lighthearted joke from me 😉

Congratulations on your success though! High ranking isn’t easy to achieve

Haha thank you I greatly appreciate it! I tried to make a joke as well, but I couldn’t think of a way to say it so I don’t think it showed 😂

Hey don’t sweat it. Emotion’s hard to detect over computers 😉

Best of luck to you!

Hang in there kiddo. Your GPA has already been added to your portal.
The 7th semester transcript won't change the GPA that you provided earlier and if it does...don't worry. Please, of all the things to worry--worry about how 10 people are tied for 2nd place--how bizarre.

Thank you! This really took some of the stress away it’s nice to be reassured! And yes it’s a very weird system, I’ve gone to many schools and this is the only school I’ve seen to do it that way

Your A- should make no difference.
As to your class rank, DS was in almost the exact same situation as you in HS. He actually received a C in a class, had cumulative GPA of 3.9 and was ranked like you. The kids above him were all “tied” with 4.0 and thus ended up with 7 Valedictorians! It’s thee most ridiculous thing I’ve ever seen at a graduation!
No consideration is given to the difficulty of the classes taken or anything else, just GPA.
So please don’t sweat your A- and keep up the great work! Your standardized test scores are very critical as well as GPA and class rank.
Best of luck

Don't sweat an A-. My kids' HS doesn't do the A, B, C, D, F grading. They go strictly by the percentage, rounded to the thousanth. My son's GPA went up by two hundredths of a point one semester, but he dropped 2 spots in class rank! But I'll tell you same thing I told my son... Remember that they look at the whole person. Class rank is only one part of it. There are many #1s who do nothing else. No sports, clubs....

Anyone in admissions will know that the top ranks are extremely volatile and that it just takes one not perfect score to change your standing. Don't stress about it. The same thing happened to me, but I realized they don't care about 1 vs 11. You're still demonstrating your amazing academic ability, and they understand that you're human; mistakes happen.

It would be different, however, if you were in the middle of your class and dropped 20 places.

You’re fine man. Now all you gotta do is be mentally prepared and get/stay in physical shape! Prepare by doing pushups, sit-ups, pull-ups and ESPECIALLY running a lot!
