Time to throw in the towel

DS hasn't received a decision from USNA or USAFA. I think it's time to throw in the towel for this application season. He has also been rejected from some high-level schools for electrical engineering. This isn't looking too hot. Anyone else in the same position?

I think, especially when it comes down to USAFA and USNA filling out the final class size, it can take a while to get the final appointments out. If you take a look at the self-reported appointments for c/o 2023, you'll see that there was a big wave of appointments on April 17, one day before TWE's went out. You're never out of the running until you receive that letter, and even then, there are stories of people receiving appointments despite having been handed a TWE. The point is, DS isn't out of the running until I-Day.

Definitely begin to consider Plan B, C, etc. as the days tick on. Start looking at the logistics of attending civilian college. Don't put all of your eggs in one basket, because it's never good to miss the housing deposit deadline for a university.

It's never over until it's over. Patience is key with Service Academies. Don't throw in the towel, because that BFE might come after all. Good luck to you and DS!

The candidate portal states the final date for direct admission is April 21. Still some hope.
While important for people to have closure, trust that a small number of appointments will go out AFTER 21 April and all the way up to the start of BCT as USAFA seeks to maximize the number entering into the class of 2024.

The reality is that we are nearing 1 APR and Plan B schools will have deadlines you need to meet. If it helps, flip the switch and focus on Plan B/C/D. Be open to the possibility that Plan A could reach out late and if so - you have a decision to make. Some monies for Plan B/C/D contingencies would be non-refundable, but I suspect it would be worth the peace of mind that your child had options and a safe landing space for next fall.

If there is any desire to re-apply for the next cycle, giving up before getting final notification of status doesn’t compare well against other re-applicants. Re-applicants often fare well because they stick around for the tough news, face up to it, turn to their alternate plan, excel, and re-apply, demonstrating determination and ability to work through adverse circumstances. All the SAs have a healthy percentage of re-applicants, some on their third or more attempt.

Too early to throw in the towel. That said, after the other rejections from the "high-level" schools for EE, what was "safe school" Plan B (or perhaps C, D, or E)?

My DS was in the same situation last year. He wasn’t ready to throw in the towel but he did just want an answer one way or another. I told him I’m sure you’ll hear something before spring break, then I said I’m sure when we get back from cruise you’ll have heard. I finally stopped saying you’ll hear soon and just be happy you have a fantastic out of state backup and it’s basically free withe your AFROTC scholarship and the Presidential scholarship you were awarded at the school. Time will tell what is going to happen just try not to dwell and one day it will just pop up to check their portal and the answer will be revealed. Stay strong and supportive even if you have doubts yourself.

DD received LOA a year ago this coming Monday followed by appointment the following Monday. Keep up the hope. The Supe has stated admissions is a priority. With all that is going on, I have to think the process is still slowed slightly. Good Luck!!!

Exact same situation here. AFROTC type 1 plus presidents scholarship covering all additional expenses. While USAFA or USCGA would be incredible, it helps to focus on plan B and see the value in my alternative options. Either way I will have a great career 4 years from now.

The Class of 2023 appointment thread shows that there were several appointments offered in April and May.

Considering that appointments listed on this forum represent only a small fraction of total appointments, March is way too early to believe it's over.

His plan B is ROTC at either Ohio state(EE), Virginia Tech engineering, or Purdue engineering.

All three of those schools are fine choices for EE and ROTC. A top #10 EE school, a Top #20 EE school and a (close to) Top #25 EE school. A better Plan B than most if EE and a military commission is his goal.

Never give up the faith! I am a college re-applicant and I felt the same way. I was rejected from a lot of the top schools and eventually rejected from the Air Force Academy and Naval Academy. However, the world worked its magic and I ended up going to UC Berkeley. I am currently awaiting a decision back from USAFA and USNA as well. Of course I wish I could've gotten in on my first round, but I don't regret any of the time I've had to grow over this past year. Your son will end up where the universe wants him to be.... try not to stress! It is out of our hands now.

Too early to throw in the towel. Please remember that USAFA is dealing with serious issues (like every organization is right now) and understandably must prioritize action items. They delayed the appointment date to April 21st for a reason -- they need more time to process applications and make decisions. Patience is the best path right now. This year is anything BUT a normal appointment season.

My admissions counselor emailed me yesterday and said:
“Your file is complete and it was sent to committee for evaluation and review. The class is nearly selected but we’re still fine tuning it. It’s pretty unlikely at this point that you may receive an offer. It’s really a waiting game now with candidates finding out their status by April 21st.”
Does this mean it’s over for me and I just haven’t received a TWE yet?

damm

Our West Point 2020 did not get any offers after graduating high school. Had Army and AF ROTC scholarships, offers at several schools. Turned it down (with much hand wringing by me) to self sponsor Northwest Prep. Busted his butt and got offer from WP the next year. USNA and USAFA did not extend offers. Can't say it will work for you.
