My application is complete, just waiting and hoping on nominations. I received a letter today asking me to come for a weekend visit. Is this a good sign, or should I not read too much into it. I also attended the summer seminar this year.

I don't know if they send it to everyone or promising candidates, but I have only completed half of my application and I received one today, so I think its most likely everyone. Really though, I have no idea.

Candidate Visitation Weekends (CVWs) are not offered to everyone. As a general rule, they are offered to well-qualified candidates. The fact you are offered one should NOT be viewed as an indication that you'll get an appointment, but it is generally a good sign.

I did not get one. Could this be a bad sign? Also I live in Annapolis so maybe they assumed that I have seen campus or maybe I just have to wait. I really hope this isn't a bad sign.

My son got not one but two (identical) ones mailed separately in the mail today. Which seemed strange because they'd sent him an identical email last week which he replied to immediately explaining why he couldn't come to the ones in the fall, but that he would really like to be considered for future ones. He also got another copy of his LOA in the mail today, but this one was a copy, not the original. Not sure why. He was excited to have 3 letters from USNA in the mailbox and they all turned out to be things he'd already received.

Not being offered a CVW now does not mean you won't be offered one at some future point in time -- they run through April, although only on certain WEs.

NEVER being offered a CVW is NOT necessarily a bad sign -- sorry for the double negative. USNA can only do so many CVWs per year; 15,000+ people apply. All well-qualified candidates can't be given CVWs.

Often (but not always) CVWs are offered to folks who did not do NASS for whatever reason. However, I've seen NASS folks also get CVWs. And seen successful appointees who never do either NASS or CVW. While being asked to a CVW is generally a good sign, I know of folks who did CVWs who did NOT receive an appointment.

CVWs offer candidates an (or another) opportunity to see what USNA is like. They are designed for the benefit of candidates. If you're offered one and can at all afford (financially) to do it, you should, even if you've done NASS. If you aren't offered a CVW, don't fret. I know it's hard but, please, don't fret. It's simply a numbers game -- way more qualified applicants that CVW spots.

And, yes, living in Annapolis COULD (could, not will) hurt your chances for a CVW or (for underclassmen) NASS. That does NOT mean living in Annapolis hurts your chances for an appointment other than that it's tough in all competitive geographic regions. Actually, it's tough everywhere, as it is for all the SAs.

I received the same. Two letters -- one offering CVW and one with a copy of the LOA I had already received. I also attended the NASS. Since I am a football player I can not attend either Fall date. Should I plan on not attending since I did attend NASS or should I request a winter/spring date? Are there winter/spring dates? I should also note that money is tight right now in my family. Will it look bad if I don't attend one?

Congrats on the LOA! If you cannot attend a weekend visit, be sure your BGO knows the reason and don't worry. Many people cannot attend for many excellent reasons. It is the Candidate who gets the CWE offer and never replies and is slow to complete the Application that will have a BGO call and lack of interest note. A weekend visit is a GREAT experience. You may be able to find/contact some Mids who attended previously and get some notes on what you missed. Speaking with them may make you try harder to attend one in the Spring, even if the LOA turns into an Appointment (fingers crossed). There are Weekends available later. From what I have heard, you will feel even better about your choice after you've attended.
Good Luck!

Freedom,
If you feel that you need to go to help you get a better idea if USNA is the right place for you than you might want to figure out a way for it to work. My understanding is that the experience at NASS is different than the experience you would get at a CVW. However, there will be dates later in the winter and spring. If you go to the USNA website and do a search for the admissions calendar, you can find future dates for the CVW. It won't be held against you if you don't go but you should email or call your Reg Dir of admissions at USNA (their number should be on the letter you received and is also on your online application) and let them know that you'd like to come but unable to do so at this point due to schedule and finances, but that you'd be interested in possibly going at a future date. Good luck and congratulations to you! (My son also got CVW invite and second copy of his LoA yesterday.)

There are dates in the Spring, just email your RD and ask him/ her about it.
CVW was an awesome experience last year! NASS was awesome as well but when you attend CVW you'll get a chance to see how your life will be for at least the next year :)... I definitely recommend it! We've already had a couple of potential sport recruitees here as drags.

Our son is attending the Oct.22-24 CVW! He didn't get to go to NASS, so he's very excited. One question: will there be transportation provided from BWI airport to USNA, or will he need to take a cab/bus/train?

Your son will need to make his own arrangements from BWI. There may be a Super Shuttle. Otherwise, the alternative is a cab service at the airport which can be on the expensive so best to share if possible.

We cannot get into BWI until after 4 from our part of the country. I seem to remember CVW opening assembly being at 5, maybe 6. The shuttle thing was not going to get him to Annapolis on time. Anyway, we ultimately decided I would also attend so I could facilitate the rent car thing and get him delivered on time. He was literally the last kid to walk into the opening assembly. They let us drive/park on the yard to deliver him.

Don't worry, but PLEASE DO notify your BGO if you aren't able to make either of these dates and we are able to add a note to your package as to why.

Just a reminder: October 24th is when the ACT exam is being given, so I imagine that those of you who are wanting to give it one more try have already registered and will be "busy" that day .

Visit Day & ACT

My daughter ended up changing her ACT to the December date in order to attend this. During the November weekend she is scheduled for her Congressional Review Board interviews so this was the best option.

CVW

Freedom: Don't sweat the CVW thing. Our Mid did NASS, couldn't afford another trip for CVW and is now a Firstie. Enjoy your last year!

My son is also changing another college visit to attend Oct 22-24 CVW. We are local and he was not able to attend NASS so, he is also very excited. Looking forward to hearing more information regarding the weekend.

We are planning to attend the parent evening on Thursday, just wondering about the Friday plans for parents.

How does one sign up to be with a Plebe they know? Is it up to person attending or the Plebe?

I don't know about Navy, but I know when my son went out to USAFA for a visit, he requested a doolie (brother of one of his soccer teammates) when requesting the visit. They confirmed the information (helpful if you know the company/squadron) and told him that they would do their best but couldn't guarantee it. It did work out and he got to be escorted by him. I would think you would have more authority at this time of life  than a plebe!

Having done the job before, have the plebe talk to his company ops officer, who will probably send them to talk to the admisions office to put in the request unless things have changed but the ops officer is the person who coordinates each individual companies drags so he should know what to do. It helps if they know what dates you're coming. The other option is just call the admissions office to ask, but make sure you know what company the plebe is in before calling.
