My son's university is allowing students the option of a letter grade or Pass/Fail this semester due to the Coronavirus disruption. Pass/Fail is GPA neutral. It doesn't hurt your GPA or help your GPA.

He is currently considering this for a class that he expects to earn a grade of "B-" in.

IMHO, I believe a " B- " would look much better on a transcript than "Pass."

What is your opinion?

Current doctrine for Army ROTC Cadet Command is that a "pass" is to be graded a 2.0 or a 'C'.

Unless one is failing, opt for a letter grade.

Definitely keep the letter grade! First off a B- is not that bad and secondly, a pass does not look good on one's transcript when there could have been a grade.

Go back to when you were in high school or college. Pass/fail was typically a cop-out. No one takes pass/fail if they think they'll get an A -- or even a B. In high school, don't take the cop-out route. Show the A, even the B. Otherwise, presume that others will see the "pass" as C or D.

cop-out or not. If you take a B instead of a pass it might make a difference on your OML.

I believe any letter grade on the bubble this semester will be upgraded with all this chaos. The professors realize the students are dealing with IT issues and don't have access to campus based resources.

here is the video. The 30:30 mark addresses this issue. Keep in mind it is from March 26th.

Unfortunately not true. At least one of DS’s professors has reiterated that he doesn’t even mathematically round up grades. An 89.99 is still a B.

Resurrecting this. DS is enrolled in a P/F only class (No option for letter grade). ROO says it won’t factor into AROTC gpa for OMS. Can anyone corroborate this? It seems, after reading this thread, that his statement could be an error? If it is, would ROO have any pull to fix it? Would hate gpa to have a 2.0 factored in.

Cannot comment on the specific circumstance, BUT whenever possible, do not opt for a P/F. It sound like he did not have an option. Perhaps DS should ask the ROO?

Remember that GPA is not as important as the grade itself. SAs don’t put much stock in GPA because of the very high variability in grading standards across tens of thousands of high schools across the country. They examine the transcript in context of the school profile. And if your school goes P/F, there’s nothing you can do about it and SAs won’t hold it against you (in the same way that, if your school doesn’t offer AP classes, they don’t hold it against you).

Right, didn’t have an option. He registered in this section, then the college decided to go remote, which is when this section changed to P/F. He asked the ROO, and he said that it won‘t factor in to ROTC gpa but in the college’s eyes, it’s worth a 4.0. Weird. After watching the video, they must be looking at providing a waiver in this situation, provided the cadets apply themselves. Got it.

EEKS, just realized this old thread was on SA Parents, not ROTC. (Neglected to catch that when I did the search feature.) Not sure how to move it over. Sorry, everyone!

DS also didn't have an option for a letter grade with one class last semester.

At this point, I can't see how Cadet Command can continue to use the old criteria when creating the OML. The virus has disrupted every institution of higher learning.

Thanks for this!
