R-Day Announcement ‘24 Pending

The level of detail and control involved in moving the Firsties back may be a precursor for what to expect for R-Day. A typical R-Day reporting process is unlikely.

The classes of '21 - '23 won't begin to return until at least June 15. It's hard to see how they can meet a June 29th R-Day - but I would not count out the ability of USMA to move mountains if they so desire. Vegas should establish an over-under line on R-Day.

Just FYI... protocol of returning the 2020 grads for June 13, 2020 graduation... may be similar strategy for incoming 2024 Plebes... ???

Thanks for posting this. It sounds like there is a definite plan to keep everything on schedule with respect the 2020 Graduation -- weird though it may with be all these accommodations -- and if that's the case, I wouldn't at all be surprised if likewise incoming Plebes -- including R-Day -- manages to happen on schedule.

The issue is that they are planning a dynamic environment. 2020 Graduation is delayed three weeks from the original date. USMA is not releasing any potential plans even to the cadets. There are a few more steps that need to be completed before 2024 shows up and that will take time.

If I were a betting man, The rest of the summer activities will also be delayed for some period.

The upper three classes need to return and it is a pretty safe assumption that they will go through some sort of screening and quarantine similar to the seniors once the Seniors depart. Once they are returned, there is usually a 2 week train up for these upper class cadets to get ready to serve as summer training leadership position. Basically they spend two weeks rehearsing everything for CBT and CFT. Once these things are complete, we will probably see another similar screening process for 2024 reporting for Beast.

Will Beast Barracks happen this summer? Yes, but it will most likely look different from year past. Many things we do not know and there are many options to get the minimum requirements complete.

Will USMA get a Task Force to support summer training? This is a big piece of the puzzle as this task force usually conducts most of the military training.
Will returning cadets get quarantined?
Will Yearlings spend the six weeks at CFT?
Will new cadets have to be quarantined?
Will the academic year get delayed?

All we can do is wait for guidance and the new cadet candidates need to be physically fit for when they get the green light.

Thank you for your insight and information.

While not an "official announcement," yesterday the WP Admissions facebook page posted that there were less than 50 days until CBT. I'd say that was a good confirmation that R-day will remain June 29. Maybe something official will be forthcoming this week after that teaser.

DS’s liaison officer just sent a text saying R-Day is still planned as normal INCLUDING parents being able to come. He did say as it gets closer we will be advised if anything changes but right now no plans to change. 🤔 I didn’t expect that response. I feel an official announcement needs to be made.

I am hearing different information from sources at the Academy. It appears there may be an announcement on May 15th about R-Day. The bottom line is nobody knows for sure at this point so we will just have to wait to hear the official announcement.

USAFA announced they are sticking with June 25th for their R-Day. No parents will be invited. Hopefully an announcement is coming soon.

It looks like details for R-Day will officially be released early next week if my sources are correct. No exact start date has been given other than "middle of July", which by deduction would put it at around Monday, 13 July since R-Day is always on a Monday.

If this all turns out to be true then Beast Barracks will only last 4 weeks instead of the usual 6. Knowing West Point that means they will jam 6 weeks of training into 4 so all New Cadets better get ready for an intense experience. (Usually it is the other way around - 4 weeks worth of training jammed into 6 :)).

For those CCs attending Beast this summer...don't fret. The Academy will ensure you get the full Beast experience. I hope everyone is training hard for what no doubt will be a very special CBT!

Just an educated guess - probably not. It appears USAFA and USNA have already set an example (no parents or family members allowed on I-day). That is just my guess so best to wait for the official announcement.

The only info our son has received is that both CBT and CFT will be condensed, no summer training other than online classes (no airborne, air assault, ranger), and no word on dates. Personally, since the graduating Class cannot have visitors, I cannot see R-Day or the return of upperclassmen having visitors either. WP is pretty much "locked down" right now, only residents and essential personnel are authorized to enter. Even if you have military ID, if you aren't there for "official" business you don't get in.

And I too look at the "Task Force" issue for training, the "Stop Movement" order currently in place expires 30 June. I imagine that the Supe got permission to bring back Firsties early because of the President coming in June. No sure the units providing personnel for WP Task Forces would be OK with some of their members travelling twice during this mess.

Remains to be seen, make your plans as you see fit, but remember to be flexible and that WP is VERY cognizant of the virus and they are going to have to find a way to keep 4400 students + staff and residents safe, distanced, and healthy. Not sure how they plan on doing that other than staggering class times, meal times, and physical training times. Right now, there are generally two and three person dorms, can't see how that is providing a level of safety, and there are no additional dorm rooms available unless all the construction is stopped and some cadets are put into those buildings undergoing renovation? This year will be one like no other!!

This all seems so odd when USNA and USAFA are starting on time and with plans already announced, although obviously USMA Graduation two weeks earlier and NY being a hot spot present very real and different challenges.

Incoming USMA cadets are still actively registering via portal for travel plans (flight and hotel) involving the same R-Day. Seems they would have suspended that if they planned to change the date. We continue to keep our fingers crossed in our house (living in denial?) that R-day will remain!

USNA already?

Perhaps. An announcement still needs to happen and is hopefully forthcoming soon.
Although I think the date will change (which I wish it would not) Admissions posted on FB 11 May new cadets had less than 50 days to report. So I am keeping the faith they will start 29 June....
