Question About Letter of Recommendations (Re-Applicant)

Good evening,

I hope everyone is holding up okay during this pandemic. I had a couple of questions regarding teacher recommendations for my USNA application. To give a bit of background, I am currently an incoming freshman in a four-year college and am reapplying to USNA. Because I am transitioning from high school to college, I was wondering whether or not USNA Admissions would prefer recommendations from my senior year math and English teachers or my future college professors? Although I imagine USNA would rather hear about my college performance, I am concerned that I won't be able to develop a strong enough relationship with my professors since most of my classes are going to be held virtually due to COVID-19. Furthermore, most of my classes will be 75-100+ since I am a freshman. Do you know what I should do?

Secondly, I was wondering if it would be worthwhile if I asked my high school’s Vice-Principal to write me a letter recommendation? He’s a Navy alum and I got to know him really well over my senior year through my tenure on student government. He’s a remarkable man and is one of the reasons why I am interested/applying to USNA. Do you think it’d be appropriate if I asked him for a recommendation?

Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope you all have a nice rest of your weekend.

for a re-applicant, if you used your junior year teacher when you first applied, you could use your senior year teacher or the college prof. however, if you used your senior year teacher last time, then you must use the college prof.

it depends on your college and how well you could get to know your professor. USNA would like to see an evaluation from someone who actually knows you somewhat, and can evaluate you against the other students, not just as a nameless/faceless grade. sometimes the freshman writing classes are small (20 or so), and in that case your should definitely use the college prof. for a large lecture of 300 students, especially if it's virtual, then you might be better off using the HS teacher. then again, you might be able to develop some type of relationship with the prof. keep in mind, you don't need to rush it, and you are better off waiting till you get to know them. as long as you have it done by thanksgiving you are fine. they won't look at your app till your transcript is received around Christmas time.

regarding the Vice Principal, you might think about asking him if he'd be willing to do the guidance councilor eval. that includes an eval and a writeup. that would probably carry more weight that a non-requested LOR.

my DS was a successful college re-app and he asked his HS principal do the guidance eval on his second time around.

best of luck

Thank you so much. This was really helpful 👍

my DS used his college professors for both his recommendations. he had almost zero interaction with his math professor since he dealt with the TA only, but that didnt preclude that professor from completing the questionnaire. it was more of a questionnaire form than a recommendation anyway. he also received an appointment within a few days of the completion of his application (Feb5) let me know if you have any other questions.
