Hi all,

I was 2Q last cycle and received two noms from my MOC. I, unfortunately, did not make it but USMA has been my dream for as long as I can remember so I am determined and I will be reapplying for the Class of 2025. I am currently in ROTC and I am seeking the ROTC nom, however, I am not entirely sure how it works/the process for receiving one. I've looked on the USMA website and it didn't include much information about the process. I was hoping someone knew how the process worked for the ROTC nom.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Why not ask the chain of command. I'm pretty sure you need their endorsement.

Go on to your portal and go to the nominations page, click the PDF opposite ROTC, this form needs to be filled out by your ROTC CO and sent to the address on the form. Good luck!

You send the form to your PMS and he will fill it out and can email it to your respective technician

Thank you for your response. I should have been more clear in my initial question that I was aware of the form and that it should be filled out, however, the language posted on the USMA website leads me to believe that the nomination does not come from the PMS. From my understanding, it seems that the PMS simply recommends you for one, at which point it is sent to another individual who then determines whether the applicant receives the nomination or not. From the USMA website: "A request for a ROTC Nomination should be made through your Professor of Military Science or Senior Instructor who must submit a Request for ROTC Nomination (Form 5-497) to the Director of Admissions"

Your PMS has not heard of a ROTC Nomination?
I am unaware if my PMS has heard of the ROTC Nomination, however, because the PMS and some Cadre have been preparing for OAL for quite some time, they have been off-campus and I have been unable to speak with the PMS. Additionally, because they have been gone, they have not been able to respond to email. I felt that my best course of action was to be proactive and educate myself on the process, so that when I meet with the PMS, and on the off chance my PMS in unfamiliar with the ROTC nomination, I would be able to explain the process. Additionally, the cadre and staff I have spoken to are unfamiliar with the ROTC nomination.

I has a similar issue: My ROTC program is majorly online and I had to go through multiple layers of my ROTC COC before I was able to schedule a meeting with the PMS. Talk to your MS1 instructor to see if you can get a meeting set up. At which point you can request a nomination personally

That's fair. @Roadking and @CLE_42 have given you good advice as to how to proceed. Maybe PM them if you need more detailed guidance. Good luck to you!

EDIT: Thank you all very much for your responses, I greatly appreciate it. I should have added that on the USMA website it states: "A request for a ROTC Nomination should be made through your Professor of Military Science or Senior Instructor who must submit a Request for ROTC Nomination (Form 5-497) to the Director of Admissions"

The language used such that a "Request" should be made through the PMS led me to believe that the PMS is not the one who grants the nomination, rather they just fill out the form and send it to USMA at which point someone else will grant or deny the nomination request/application.

Perhaps I am focusing too much on the specific language and wording posted on the USMA website regarding ROTC Nominations, however, I am inclined to believe that USMA is not just putting out information without forethought.

One of my MS1 instructors is the Deputy Assistant PMS, so he has been away for OAL. I have been speaking with my other instructor and we spoke about setting up an appointment to meet with the PMS. Just so I am clear, it is the PMS who grants the nomination as opposed to recommending you for a nomination at which point someone else grants/denies your request? I apologize if I'm sounding like a broken record, I just want to make sure I get this right. Thanks

See reliable source below.

I just received an ROTC nom a few weeks back so I understand it decently well. The basic process is being interviewed by your PMS (Maj, LTC) and then submitting the form. At that point, USMA selects CC's from those who have requested ROTC nom. I am unsure of how many slots there are, but I remember seeing something about 80 slots on another thread. Can anyone confirm this or correct me?

Nope. It is that easy. Once your PMS signs sends and wp receives it then you already got a nomination. Now you will be put into the rotx nomination category where you will be competing with to earn an appointment but not as easy as from your congressman.

Have a related question.... DD received an appointment to USMA and then subsequently received a 4 year AROTC scholarship. There is a 30 day window to accept or decline the ROTC scholarship offer. If she accepts the ROTC scholarship offer, will the USMA appointment be withdrawn?

No - This is a common occurrence and accepting the scholarship will have no bearing on USMA. Good luck and congrats to your DD.
