USNA I got declined???

Thanks much! He also saw in the application system today that our other Senator (Capito-WV), nominated to USAFA. They haven’t even notified him yet of the nom. He now has 2 nominations:

-USNA from Sen. Manchin-WV
-USAFA from Sen. Capito-WV

SO proud of that boy! Good luck to you all and your kids!

Let me be blunt as well- as a Marine, and an Officer, I have zero interest or appetite for a candidate who only wants to serve as an officer if they get to attend an Academy. Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen deserve better.
DS (USCGA 2018) had an acquaintance from Sea Scouts that wanted to attend USNA to become a Naval Officer. He applied three or four times without success and in the meantime attended college. I encouraged him to participate in the NROTC progam at the university. I lost touch with him, but saw him a few years later. He finished a civil engineering degree and when I asked him about his Navy goals, he said he would not be a 'real officer' if he didn't graduate from the academy.

@Recruiting Station XO and @rjb,

I guess this means this guy is not a real officer.

I think you misinterpreted what he meant. He meant you shouldn't only want to join the military if you go to the academy. You should want to be an officer in the military no matter if you go through ROTC or the Academy. It shouldn't make a difference because at the end of the day you should want to serve your country.

Hopefully cb7893 is being facetious.

I remember pointing out to DS's acquaintance that DS's GF (also USCGA) is the daughter of a Naval officer (then O-6, now O-7). He was an NROTC graduate, 3000 flight hours & 1000 carrier landings in the F-14A/B/D and F/A-18F and CO of a carrier.

My point to the young man was that certainly this was a Naval Officer with impressive credentials and he didn't attend USNA. This young man just couldn't get it out of his head that you had to attend USNA.

"Facetious" is too mild a word.

I'm picturing this clown 10 years from now, sitting with his buddies at the bar during the Annual Rock and Dirt Convention, watching a news report about the latest Navy SEAL exploits saying, "Yeah, I coulda done that, but Hell, I wasn't going to join if I couldn't go to Annapolis and getting in there is all political."

BTW my DS is an Army "Officer".

Copy on all, no mix up here folks. Also, so many students are unaware of Officer Candidate/ Training School across all the branches, requiring no participation in ROTC or Academy attendance. For some candidates, the best option may be for them to completely focus on college, and then apply for OCS after graduation, or even between summers at college. Ultimately, each pipeline creates quality officers. They're designed that way.
