The Gunsmith Thread

I did extensive ProMag testing today. They run reliably with sixteen (16) rounds. Not so much with a full mag of 18.
Still, worth it. They were only $14.50 each.

@THParent - I was wondering...

Given your job as gunsmith did you ever run into problems with the TSA when traveling through airport security checkpoints?

Those random chemical swabs of hands or baggage could have been problematic.

DS has seen some of his unit flagged after returning from some exercises taking commercial flights.

Surprisingly, no.

I do the TSA PreCheck thing because I don't like waiting in line with the rest of the cattle.
Easy peasy.

If I have to stand in a line, I almost always audibly say "moo". It usually makes everyone chuckle.

I also will get into an elevator and tell everyone "Well, you're probably wondering why I called you all here today..."
Or if someone in the elevator asks "Which floor?" in a 5-story building and I say "Six please", just to see the look on their face.

Look, life is short. ;)

My kids used to groan on this one, but let me tell you how proud I was of my youngest child's initiative using this one last year. One lady didn't get it and couldn't find the 9 button. He didn't miss a beat and said "hmmmm, we must have been on the other elevator, we entered on 9, right Dad?" As soon as the doors closed and she stepped off the elevator we chuckled together for a moment and shared a high five.

I wore a t-shirt this weekend to my grandsons' house that reads, "5 out 4 people have trouble with math."

The 6 year old 1st grader said, "That doesn't make sense." I said, I know dummy, that's why it's funny. It's a joke.

Thing is he is no dummy and he couldn't even enjoy the joke because he over-analyzed it instead of just going with it.

The 4 year old who will sail through life with his good looks actually laughed at it.

Mine reads 4 out of 3, here's a pic.

I love it when people see it and chuckle. That's when I ask them if they are one of the 4 or one of the 3, then watch them contemplate... Too much fun.

Back to the TSA thing....I have a belt with brass from a 12 gauge shotgun shell on it. TSA just doesn't know what to think about it. It is 100% innocuous, but if you saw how TSA reacted you'd think it was a weapon of mass destruction. (It came from Orvis or LL Bean, leading terrorist organizations). I try to remember to wear a different belt when traveling now.

I usually take a small backpack with me. Everything I am carrying in my pockets goes into ziploc bags into the backpack. I put my belt and shoes in there too. When I go through security, I put the backpack on the belt and wear Oofos sandals. Sometimes they tell me to take the sandals off and put them on the belt. Sometimes they don't. It depends upon the airport and how uptight they are. I keep wearing the Oofos on the plane as well. They are like pillows for your feet.

@THParent Do you have any experience with Retay firearms? The Masai Mara 12 gauge auto-loader is on my short list but I haven't gotten my hands on one yet. I plan on shooting an acquaintance's when I get home but am looking for any advice in the meantime.

I haven't had one in my hands, but this appears to be one of several new copies of the inertia-driven Benelli M4 (Benelli's patent expired in 2006).
I have handled the MC312 version from Girsan (also made in Turkey). They work just fine. Not the fit and finish of a Benelli M4, but they are about $1,000 less than a Benelli, so there you go.

The Retay Masai Mara on the other hand, looks really refined. Almost (dare I say it) as nice as an actual Benelli. Of course it also costs more than TWICE AS MUCH as the Girsan - while (most likely) not working any more reliably.

There you have it.
It's a copy - and since Girsan has already made a copy that is way more affordable - it's an expensive copy.

Girsan by the way, makes the Regard which is a perfect Beretta 92 copy, at a fraction of the price.

A guy brought this 1978 Remington 1100 in after running over it with his truck. Since this is my fun job, I wasn't there when he dropped it off but the salespeople said that he was more then a little distraught about it. You see, this was his Dad's gun (Dad has since passed on) and he figured that it was trashed. The repair ticket said to do what I could and replace the stock if required.

Not only did I fix it (only the recoil spring guide inside the stock was bent), but the stock wasn't even cracked or otherwise damaged. I went through the thing with a fine toothed comb and made sure that it was all clean and properly lubricated (I don't think that it had ever had the trigger group or bolt out of it before). When he picked it up and held it in his hands, he actually teared up and got all emotional. He told me that I was a miracle worker and that it had never looked this good as far back as he could remember.

This particular miracle was only $75. ;)
