I-Day

And drinking. I recommend some drinking.
Let me elaborate on the point made by @THParent: Drink water. A lot of water. Because Annapolis in the summer is a very hot and humid place. You’ll sweat bucketfuls, and if you don’t replace the lost fluids, you’re liable to keel over before the mids even march onto T Court for the oath.

I’m pretty sure that’s the drinking that @THParent meant. 😉

With the recent changes in the CDC guidelines and encouragement from POTUS for outdoor events, is there any chance USNA will allow parents on I-Day , even though the PTR paperwork states drop-off only?

I would not put money on this happening. USNA’s mission is to get the plebes off to the proper start, to ensure success over the next four years and beyond. Leadership got blindsided last year and did the best they could. It was not ideal, and the recent shotgunning of the 4/C and 3/C classes — a restart, if you will — attests to that.

A lot of time has been spent diagnosing and debriefing last plebe summer. DD is in a billet for this year’s version, and she tells me enormous effort is being put into learning and course-correcting (as with any military mission, by the way). So the last thing leadership wants is for all that work to blow up because there were non-essential personnel at I-Day, a COVID breakout ensued, and the plebes found themselves in quarantine beyond what was initially planned. That would stink.

Is it an overcautious reaction? Maybe. But harsh as it seems, the mission of USNA is indoctrination of 1200 plebes, not hurt feelings because Mom & Dad couldn’t see Junior take the oath and march into Mother B (which may not happen anyway).

What would that actually accomplish? Parents likely wouldn't get to see them after the drop off anyway, and the oath part isnt for 2 weeks later.

Ripping the bandaid off at the drop-off site, at the gate, at the airport, etc is still going to be a last picture, a hug and a tear regardless of where or when that day (or day before) it happens.

As a current plebe parent, I think missing parents weekend was worse than missing I-Day. Hopefully, that one stays "on".

With the "written in jello" rubric, I was simply curious. I agree that parents' weekend is the one I want to be at if I could only pick one. But, who wouldn't hold out hope for a chance to be at both? ;)

OK, just to confirm where we think we are with I-Day, subject to change, nothing written in pen, semper gumby, etc. Would I be correct in believing that our current, collective wisdom is that:

1. Our plebes will be getting a date/time for their drop off slot;
2. The I-Day drop offs will be on June 29 and 30;
3. Other than drop off, there will be no visitors allowed on the Yard;
4. The actual induction ceremony will be in July (the 12th?) following the conclusion of the ROM period, and it will be broadcast through some online portal; and
5. No info yet as to if and when there will be a parent weekend.

Does that cover what we currently believe or know about I-Day (and parent weekend)?

Put them on a plane and save the money for visiting later.
I know, easy for me to say. I went to both I-Day and PPW (and they were both pretty great).

Crazy Larry just lifted his ridiculous you-must-wear-a-mask-outside emergency order yesterday, so maybe there's some hope for a pseudo-normal Annapolis on the horizon.

If all the plebes show up vaccinated, why do they need ROM for 2 weeks? Get to work day one.

As a part of #3 is there a parents’ briefing organized by the Alumni Association? And do we know where it will take place, or is it meant to be virtual?

Review the info on the Parent pages at the USNA Alumni Assn (USNA.com, not .edu, since it is an independent non-profit) at the link below. The Parent program coordinator contact info is included. That person will be your best source of current info on Alumni Assn events.

USNA has the say-so on any organization’s on-Yard events. No doubt there are many alternate plans in play.

Parents weekend is august 12-15 tentatively right now.

It's perfectly fine to be curious about these things as a plebe 2 be parent. No one here knows the answer to your question. My guess is your question is "will we get a normal I day?" Considering the PTR has gone out, I am doubtful. I am disappointed for you. This virus has stolen so much from so many. USNA traditions are no where near the top of the list, but they important, none the less. Here's to a normal summer otherwise and a normal fall with Yard traditions and parent traditions back in place.

They are following DoD COVID regs which are fairly strict at this time. Many servicepeople who have already been vaccinated
have had to ROM under the current DoD and Navy policies.
