@Kierkegaard @Skipper07 (current stars of the highly-regarded reality series, “Real Mids of Annapolis”) plus whichever other current mids I have overlooked, what are you hearing about Food Truck Thursdays?

I just saw a post on LinkedIn from a former shipmate who was a popular Food Service Officer when I was a BattO who now works over in NABSD (Business Services Division) mentioning this.

Food trucks have come a long way from “Roach Coaches” selling geedunk, breakfast burritos and bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches on toast. Veterans - raise your hand if you started work at oh-dark-thirty and ran out of the building or hangar or ship onto the pier when you heard the dulcet tones of the roach coach sound off at 1030, when your stomach was growling. 🖐

Bonus points for reminding me what Army and Air Force call geedunk (junk food, snacks not of the kind your doctor likes).

Last year, they set up on Cooper Road (in front of Dahlgren Hall).

During COVID 2019-2020, our neighborhood booked a monthly food truck gathering. You ordered and paid online, maintained social distance and masked up while in line to pick up, got to wave at neighbors and exchange a few words at a distance. I still dream of the grilled cheese truck.

I had pretty good schwarma from a food truck in D.C. not too long ago. I'll bet schwarma would be a good seller with MIDNs on The Yard.

Food Trucks in the Yard ?
Are Plebes allowed to skip meals in King Hall now ?
What is the world coming too...

Back in the day, I don't recall any alternatives to what we were served except Steerage ? (Just googled it to see if Steerage still existed, and it sounds like they have a more choices there as well !). I think Dominos delivered as well, but that was a lot more common at NAPS. (Maybe because we saw more money at NAPS).

We had to go down to the tables whether we were going to eat or not.

I'll bet your whiteworks shrunk since then, too
Yea ..and my flight jacket ... clothes shrink when you store them in a closet for a long time !

Yes, just as a Plebe -- upperclass could do what they wanted for meals, but we really didn't have many alternatives. As Plebes, I don't think we rated Steerage - you either ate what they served, ate PBJ (always on the table), or went without.

Dinner was not required as a Plebe 4 out of the 5 nights of the week when I went through. Breakfast and lunch were required every week day. Although food is much better now too. Snacks, fueling station, grab and go options, expansion of food options, food overall, heck even the ice cream machine… all much better than we had. All good changes in my mind. We could go to Drydock or Steerage, even as Plebes, but could not sit down there unless on Liberty. Some of the stuff like BBQ, CFA and others being brought in for Bridage meals… that never occurred once. I am glad things are better (I know current Mids probably don’t believe that), but any OG walked in to King Hall today, and saw all the snacks, options, soda machines, eggs to order, etc… would all think it’s a high end place!

They have an auto dog there? My DS has never said anything about ice cream.
If it's anything like the one they had at New River, what it dispenses can only be called ice cream in the broadest sense.

I recall rating Steerage as a plebe but agree with Hoops that sitting down was an U/C privilege. I don't recall any Domino's. You pretty much ate King Hall food other than WEs b/c, when you took home $60/month, you couldn't afford many meals out. As for King Hall . . . No salads. Foods high in fat -- often fried and / or cooked in butter. The options were limited and the calories high, which was why women especially had trouble keeping weight off. Word was that, if you ate a normal portion of each meal each day, you were looking at close to 6,000 calories.

I'm all for food trucks. However, I also think it's important for squads to eat together. So, if you find the right balance . . .

Food trucks!!!! well that would be amazing! I know my plebe would love that!!! King Hall is getting bad reviews right now from mine!

I think that Plebes all start out thinking that the food is great. As that first AC year wears on however, the food doesn't change as much as the Plebes do.

We’ve had food trucks come a few times a month in the evening for as long as I’ve been here minus a hiatus during covid. I never heard of any mids buying from them (Gotta save $$ for the weekend) but I guess enough do for it to be profitable. Sometimes there are food trucks during lunch outside the Mid Store lot and I’ve seen officers buy from them but never mids.

Lunch is mandatory Mon-Fri and with the new Dant so is breakfast Mon-Thurs. Much of the Brigade is unhappy with the new breakfast requirement, myself included. One more mando event, and most of the food goes to waste because many mids don’t even eat breakfast or don’t like the powdered egg fare. My plebe year we had 2 mandatory breakfasts per week and that was ended in 2019 to save money and improve lunches and dinners, so you can imagine the effects now. Now that my rant is out of the way, I do understand the new Dant’s reasoning (not that it matters whether I do). There were zero Brigade meals last year and 3/4 of the Brigade is in a new company, so it’s supposed to build back camaraderie. Just wish it could be done when I’m no longer half-asleep and over something other than a thawed Eggo pancake.

Study break over. @Skipper07 if you’re reading this, hope Six Weeks is going well.

Spoke to DD today, surprised that she liked what was available for dinner. Her standards for food were high before PS ( thanks to DW's cooking), so it's difficult to bear anything less. So cannot for sure say whether the food provided was good or her food standards have lowered.. ;)

agree......mine is struggling with eating healthy food - she really needs that for her sport....she is surviving but would love to have some better nutrition for her day.....and yes the powder eggs are something she says is really not good!

I was getting after my 3C recently, encouraging him to take Liberty one of these days. He said he doesn't really mind being on the Yard over the weekends as it's the only time the food is really stellar. He sent me a picture of his Sunday breakfast, it was massive. Cannot fathom he is putting it all down but he assures me he ate it all. He also noted that food improves dramatically when Drags are on the yard.

He won't be spending a lot of time at food trucks, too expensive, but I do try to augment his food piggy bank with some cash occasionally.
Apparently, the line for salads is too long to be worth it to him.

I had spoiled my kids with my great home cooking (nope, not humble) and he has been forced to recalibrate his pallet and expectations.
He won't keel over so he should be fine.

Hopefully, the 6-week exams go well this week for all MIDN. Mine too is not a huge fan of mando breakfast, but it is what it is. One more thing to fit into a 24 hour day.
