I had a quick talk on the phone with my son today and he told me that no phones will be allowed at the graduation ceremony. I asked if that was for Midshipmen only, or also the general audience. He wasn't sure.

It made me think... How many people still own cameras to capture that first salute?

I suspect that is a directive for the mids. Not a good optic for TV coverage for some mids to be head down on phones and disengaged or taking pics when senior leadership is speaking, including the Commander in Chief.

Be sure to set your rendezvous location up in advance, if they are not able to text you.

The mids are usually told to not bear hug or high five the senior official, and I assume that guidance now includes taking selfies, as there always seems to be someone who is extremely happy and expresses it exuberantly.

It's not a good optic in my house, either! That goes for my Mid and his two sibs. Makes sense. Thanks.

Applies to mids only, according to DD. She actually said she’d leave her phone in her room. 😳 And makes perfect sense to bar them, frankly. Not a good look at all.

I just hope they all stay awake. Getting caught sleeping on TV during one of these speeches won't look that great, either.

Phones were banned to speed up USSS screening.

Phones are no longer banned.

For non-mid attendees, less is more. You're going to watch a ceremony for a few hours, not go on vacation for a week.

Everything you take has to be super-carefully screened. If everyone in line ahead of you takes just one extra minute for screening, imagine how much longer you'll be waiting. So be courteous to others and take only what you need to get through the ceremony. After that, you can go to your car and get everything else.
