Hello! I am trying to plan for the summer and have a couple of questions regarding walking on for sports. I know that you choose a sport to practice with over the summer and then there is a two week walk on period. Is this after the summer? Would it be possible to practice with a different team and then try to walk on to another? Thank you so much!

DS will try to walk on to lacrosse. The coach said they do some little stuff over the summer and then more details will be given for the fall schedule. That sounds like to me that the walk on period is the fall, at least for lacrosse.

Navy lax recruiting seems to be on the upswing. A number of national ranked many quality recruits.

The inside lax magazine rankings of recruits for each year are a little deceiving ——some on the list may already be more non recruited walk-ons and not actively recruited by the coaches.

some on the list are direct admits for a given year and some go to naps and will be showing up the next year and some few on the list may end up instead at State, U or Tech.

But overall strong looking recruits and lots of them .

This is not an answer as far as varsity walk on tryouts , which I think you are correct will be in the fall. but the link above may end up being your best final bet. My understanding is that Navy has a club lax national powerhouse.

They can be contacted via Instagram. And it seems an email link to the coach.

Good Luck no matter which Navy team it ends up being

Kind of late in the game to say this, but hopefully your DS and his coaches have been in touch with the lacrosse coach. Usually with more competitive D1 sports such as lacrosse, soccer, and football there “walk ons” and “invited walk ons”. You want to be in the latter group.
Also, USNA has a very good club lacrosse team as well. I’m not sure it is common, but I know of at least one player who moved from the club team to the official team.

I can imagine there are some kids who find the D1 commitment is too much with the academics at Navy and to be sure the academics are probably the far more important aspect of your time there. I know Varsity sport helps your OOM, but I wonder how much it can offset a drop in your GPA. We would have to understand the OOM calc .

Somewhere we have an interesting thread, within the past 12 months or so, asking this question——does being on a SA varsity team help or hurt gpa and do people quit teams because of gpa.

In general as I remember from that thread:

—Those that quit to concentrate on grades tend to be more often those not playing a lot or at all.

—Some responded that being on a team helped with studies and in general surviving the academic year.

Overall with my first one I’d say being on a team for 4 years was very much a net positive.

It’s true he never learned to march properly, or maybe at all, but his grades did not suffer.

The latter may have had something to do with the help he got from smarter in certain subjects team mates.

Out of season I was a full point higher on my GPA than in season (minus plebe year when I was a hot mess). It’s exhausting. Yes, you get extra points in the OOM, but nothing massive really. There are pros and cons to it and it’s different for every athlete. It is a ton of work… especially if you don’t see playing time.

LOL -- everyone learns to march properly during Plebe Summer, but I recall a couple football players in my Company that never marched in another Prade until their Commissioning Week. I don't recall if they were ever issued a rifle.

I marched Commissioning week. That was about it. I some how led nearly Marine Corps formation that required a Lt with a sword being the ‘academy grad’ in my unit who knew drill and how to use a sword. And this is coming from a basketball player who barely stood in formation. We know how to drill… when we want to.

If it helps, I tried to walk on for soccer, as I played on a two-year state championship team in HS. I was a life-long dinghy sailor, but wanted to try something else. After several hours of drills and skills, I was politely asked if I was interested in anything else! Actually heard one of the assistants say “the rest of his high school team must have been pretty good”. Guess that’s why I wasn’t recruited, but I enjoyed sailing! I say go for it! Worst that can happen is you have a better story than mine.

I'm another that didn't march in any parades from Plebe summer right up to my 1/C Year Commissioning week. Actually, I didn't even need to march for Commissioning week as I had another "tough duty" assignment (Backdrop Sailing) but voluntarily marched in the final parade because I wanted to jump in the Reflecting Pool with all of my classmates. Yes, I was issued a rifle.

I think my brothers class was one of the last ones to jump in the Reflecting Pool.

Reflecting pool. ? ..Rookie stuff. Santee Basin baby !

Funny, I thought I had thrown away my Full Dress Jacket following that swim, but apparently my mother in law saved it.... reappeared in my house about 20 years later.....like so many things of that era, it had shrunk considerably.

for women lax the try out period is the first 2 weeks of the school year. none made it last year - both the mens and women's teams are very big - the girls that tried to walk on did participate with recruits during plebe summer - wall ball etc. there are no coaches at plebe summer sports period for lacrosse

Along the same lines but for sprint football. Should P2B bring cleats? Is there anything to do ahead of time if this is an interest?

My daughter is part of 2027 recruit class for lacrosse. They just went 4-1 in a committed tournament only losing to UNC by 1 goal, the eventual tourney winner. The talent pool is deep. I wouldn't dissuade anyone from trying out, but it may be a tough hill to climb.

On a side note, I can't tell you how amazing these women are. Unbelievably, athletic. Stayed tuned for more good Navy Women's Lacrosse.
