Recognition 5 weeks later

Recognition has been pushed to April, a whole 5 weeks later. There was a mention of the decision being weather-based. Does anyone have any insight?
I personally think it's a pretty drastic change especially since the 2026 kids are currently at basic and probably at their low point. It seems like it could have been a gradual change that took place over 2 to 4 years with each class gaining an extra week or two until recognition. An extra 5 weeks in one year is quite the jump.
Please don't post and say it is no big deal unless you're a 2026er!

The class of 2023 did not get recognized until they came back to campus on 8/15, due to Covid. The wording on the recoginition was to get back to previous recognition dates.

I think that the class of 26 will adapt to the dates and we as parents must support them. In the military, we must adapt and forge ahead!

USNA’s plebe recognition (Herndon Monument Climb following a few days after Sea Trials) is the precursor to Comm Week, after the academic year is essentially done.

2026 won’t have prior experience to compare it to, so why not just go the extra weeks, or whatever leadership is contemplating. 2026 will then have a boasting point over previous classes about how theirs was done. They’ll be fine. They will be well-versed in embracing the suck by then.

Change is the one constant of military life. Complaining about military life is another.

It’s only 3 weeks later than last few years. Really, it’s not a big deal other than going somewhere for spring break they will still be in their dress blues.

Recognition is tough just to get to, and an extra month certainly isn't going to help with that. Every cadet currently has been granted recognition, and the majority of us understand the importance of earning the prop and wings. The path to Rec sucks but we all feel the value in the fourth-class training system and we are all proud of the work we put in to "make it that far". The hugs we gave to each other once Rec ended were some of the tightest and most genuine I've ever shared in my life. The Commandant is slowly making things harder, and that's not necessarily a bad thing - it's worse in the moment, but at the end it makes everything so much sweeter.

2026 is going to be a very gritty, very resilient class. They're going to brag on Jodel about how they had to do an extra month, about how their experience was harder, and how their class is going to be the "toughest" on the hill. It'll be hard - but hard is the whole point. We don't always agree with what Gen Moga decides, but he has a star on his shoulder for a reason. They'll be just fine, and in the end, each of them will be more proud of their prop and wings than the rest of us.

Well said! Hard is the point of it all. I'm glad my 26er will have it harder. He and his classmates can handle it and the rewards will be great. That feeling at the end of recognition is like nothing else...besides graduation.

Several years ago the Leadville 100 run added over two miles to the race course, but kept the cutoff time the same.

The 14x finisher and founder, Ken Chlouber's response to "concerns" was..."Don't worry. We're not gonna charge you for the extra miles. So enjoy them for free!"

Class of 2026 - enjoy the extra 5 weeks free of charge! They're going to be MORE, not less, for doing so.

Rest assured the rumor mill will have that date changing 150 times in the coming months. USAFA 86’s recognition was prior to spring break. No one thought to make water available and close to 200 ended up in the hospital mainly for dehydration.

‘87 showed up and everything was different for BCT and Doolie year as the administration feared a repeat. ‘87’s recognition included the renewal of the long March back and took place after second semester finals

USAFA’a primary tradition is change. Recognition moves based on the administration. The water gardens sometimes have water and sometimes filled with plants

The tradition is the pendulum as everything that once was eventually comes back

Ah yes, the '86 Hell Week...oh, excuse me, we can't call it that now..." recognition."

It was...poorly handled. I remember it well as I was a firstie and a groupie...

My brother told me his senior year the doolies “opted out” after day 1 figuring they couldn’t not recognize everyone if they banded together. They all learned a tough lesson that year after recognition was canceled and all Doolie restrictions were put back in place until several weeks later when it could be rescheduled.

The weather patterns over the last several years prompted the decision to move Recognition to April. In fact, if I remember correctly, it snowed on Recognition last year. The fact that they have Spring Break before Recognition means they can rest up and come back prepared to show the cadre they have what it takes to earn those prop& wings!

Will it stay there from now on? That remains to be seen.
