My daughter has an official visit at VMI (swimming) coming up in September.

This coming Saturday, we will be passing by Lexington and she was wanting to stop by VMI to look around and just get a visual.

I wasn’t sure If VMI allowed that sort of thing or not. Can you just drive in, park and walk around like you can at other colleges?

Thanks!

Yes, the entire Post is a National Historic Monument and you can go everywhere except inside barracks. Hopefully the museum will be open when you visit. Lexington is a great town. You can also visit Washington and Lee which is right next door and has a great museum.

Note cadet guided tours for unofficial visits.

Thanks for the info! Not sure we’ll have time for a full tour this trip, but great to know this is an option just in case!

Current VMI Cadet, here's my two cents!

Pure Eats is also really good, same with Salerno's. The restaurants in Lexington are outstanding, you really can't go wrong. My personal favorite place to eat after a long week is Napa Thai, they have large portion sizes and amazing food.
As for visiting, like many said it is an open campus, barracks (and I think the academic buildings too) is just off-limits.

Macado’s is a Keydet staple
DS loves that place. He ended up going elsewhere, but still talks about how much he liked eating at this place each time we visited VMI. Agree, Lexington is a nice town.

By the way how is Macado pronounced?

Mack-a-due
or
Ma-cod-o?

Mack-a-due….which is wrong English-wise, but correct. (See “Staunton” and “Buena Vista”)

DS and I toured it in July. We both loved it and he had a good interview there. You MUST tour the museum and take in the tour when you can. Had some great conversation with the cadets that gave us the tour. I'm actually hoping my son goes here!
