VMI Class of 2028

Congratulations! My DS got accepted to VMI Class of 2028 last 22 Nov. He has AFROTC HSSP. He is still waiting though for his 3 SAs and VT application results.

Haha through my interview and the videos I have watched about VMI, I know the ratline will be very tough. I'm trying my best to prepare for it, but the nerves are already getting to me.
They can kill you but they can't eat you. A body must be returned. Just kidding. I'm not a VMI grad but will say this. When the going gets tough, remember the reasons you wanted to get into it. That goes regardless of your endeavors be it VMI or culinary college. Be sure to visit though. VMI is different from any place I've ever been and I've been to a lot of places.

I really want to! But I live several states away and currently have no one to take me. Debating on going by myself, but I'll have to finance my trip.

It would probably be a wise investment to make the trip there. Whatever direction you decide to go you want to be sure that you are confidant in your choice so you can stay the course. DS is very happy with his choice of AROTC scholarship and traditional college. He just graduated from Air Assault School at Ft. Campbell, where one of his newest friends he made there was from the Citadel. His friend loves it there, but it was clear to my son that would not have been a good fit for him. Best of luck and congratulations!

@ArmyROTCApplicant why are you "very nervous"?
Doc, it's probably good that OP is nervous. To me that shows an awareness of what to expect, and knowing it won't be easy.

I agree with Doc that OP should try to visit if possible. Having said that, the day my son matriculated was the first time he (and his parents) ever saw VMI. He graduated several years ago. He would tell OP that it is very difficult, but an incredible opportunity if it is what you really want.

My DS wants to do ARTOC at an SMC — but at a crosstown "regular" college. He loves the atmosphere at the SMC but definitely does not want to be in that military environment 24/7 for his four years of college. I think one of the best things about ROTC is that there are so many schools with programs and so many options that students really have the opportunity sort of customize the kind of experience that fits them best.

Congrats to your DS on his accomplishments. We are waiting for January board results right now, but I know if my DS is fortunate enough to become a cadet, those summer training school opportunities are something he is really interested in pursuing.

Yep! I plan to go to their Open House in March. Can't wait to experience the school in person! Does anyone know the difference between a cadet guided tour and VMI's open house? Is there any information or experience that one has that the other does not?

@ArmyROTCApplicant - keep in mind that any tour is going to give you just a small glimpse of what life is really like as a cadet. It's going to be a challenge, but it that is what you are looking for it is the right place.

Do yourself a favor if you decide to go and truly give it your all. It's going to be tough and there will be many times you are going to fill like quitting or wish you never started in the first place. There will be a few cadets who try to skate by and maybe get an "injury" when the going gets tough. Definitely report a real injury if it happens, but don't be the person who is trying to take the easy way out or not giving your best. Cadre will see that and even if you are not the leader of the pack they will see who is really busting their butt trying and who is trying to skate by.

Best of luck to you.

The tour just show you around and points out the buildings and barracks. The open house allows you to spend the night in barracks with Cadets and talk to them about their cadet experience.
