Honorable medical discharge after 1 year & GI Benefits

Great data points and experiences....thanks for your service. I wonder though - did you file through the VA claims process at all? Would you have stayed in the reserves if you were awarded a high rating through the VA? I went through the process and was awarded 100%. I can go be seen at the...

Honorable medical discharge after 1 year & GI Benefits

@dgcango This will be helpful for the Post 9/11 too: Here's a table: | **Active Duty Service** | **Percentage of Maximum Benefit Payable** | **Yellow Ribbon Program Eligibility** | |-------------------------------------------------...

    Grad School after ADSO

Correct - in order for Service Academy graduates to obtain 100% of the Post 9/11 GI Bill, they need to serve 36 months of active duty service after completing their 5 years of Active Duty Service Obligation (ADSO). My Academy class at USCGA was the last to obtain 100% entitlement of the Post...

Honorable medical discharge after 1 year & GI Benefits

@Capt MJ I'd love to hear your thoughts on if the Reserves are worth it for SA grads. I have a lot of classmates who are wondering whether to kick it in the reserves for the remainder of the 20. Seems like Tricare Reserve is fairly cheap with a ~$200/month premium and no deductibles. Tricare...

Honorable medical discharge after 1 year & GI Benefits

Hey OP! Have your son fight this. He could get a medical retirement vs a medical separation. Wayyy more benefits to this. For instance - tricare for life. If you child is medically retired they also get access to the FULL GI Bill. In order to be considered medically retired, they need a...

    Grad School after ADSO

I absolutely agree with this. It's been over 5 years since I got out. I knew I wanted to work in cybersecurity, and it's a field that doesn't really rely on formal education. Having a degree in EECS helps of course, but I've met talented people in this field without an undergraduate degree...

    Grad School after ADSO

It's totally worth it. My Academy class at USCGA was the last one to be able to earn 100% of our Post 9/11 GI Bill merely by completing our 5 years of ADSO. I entered in June 2010, and Congress enacted a new bill that would require those who obligated to the USCGA after January 2011 to serve...

If you could go back to your Freshman year of ROTC or SA, what would you do differently? Reflections on the past -

I would've majored in Cyber Systems if that was offered during my time at the Academy. IF I could go back to the majors offered during my time at CGA, I would've chosen Operations Research over Electrical Engineering. Why you may ask? It's helpful in my field (cybersecurity) to have the EECS...

    Where Are They Now

Correct. MHA only pays out when you are enrolled in classes

    Where Are They Now

With the exception of those who entered the Coast Guard Academy prior to January 4th, 2011. Cadets and Prep School scholars who entered before this time began accruing Post 9/11 GI Bill eligibility upon graduation from USCGA. The Post-9/11 Veteran Educational Assistance Improvements Act of...

Apparently Med School through USUHS is available to CG Officers now (not cadets)

Oh I'm probably familiar with that person...but this is for an MD. Much more interesting. I guess it's only limited to PCP though for residency. I have a few classmates who went onto med school with their GI Bills. More freedom to choose your residency that way...

DD just let us know she will be resigning after ADSO

VET TEC was sadly nixed recently

DD just let us know she will be resigning after ADSO

Happy to hear. Additionally, did she go through the Benefits Delivery at Discharge program? Highly recommend that she looks into filing a claim with the VA. Even having a VA rating of 10% is helpful for different benefits. She earned them

Apparently Med School through USUHS is available to CG Officers now (not cadets)

This may be old news, but recently learned that CG JO's in the ranks of O1-O3 may apply to USUHS and attend medical school. This isn't available to cadets. I have no interest in being a physician, but maybe this is helpful information to someone out there...

Billet Night for the USCGA Class of 2024 - Thursday 7 March 2024

Good insights on all and your previous comments. I'll detail some of my career path below. I was an EE major at the Academy. I would have done the cyber systems major personally as well if it was around. I enjoyed the CS portion of the computer systems track, but did not like all of the signal...

Billet Night for the USCGA Class of 2024 - Thursday 7 March 2024

I"m interested to know the promotability of those who go direct to Cyber billets. I didn't particularly enjoy my DWO tour, but there was so much value i got out of it even now. Sea stories, knowing what annoys me/what doesn't, seeing cool places.

Billet Night for the USCGA Class of 2024 - Thursday 7 March 2024

Nah. Sectors do operational jobs. Maritime prevention and response. Say inspecting incoming ships. Coordinating rescue centers for shore based SAR or responding to oil spills, natural disasters. Things of that nature

Billet Night for the USCGA Class of 2024 - Thursday 7 March 2024

Was underway on a white hull ship. Did a lot of drug busts, migrant interdictions, and a handful of SAR cases. Went to a busy Sector and served as an intelligence officer. Worked with lots of local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and the intelligence community. Got out at five...

Billet Night for the USCGA Class of 2024 - Thursday 7 March 2024

Sped run through it while working...looks like no one went to a Sector at all this year. Seems like everyone got a great assignment
