I was just talking to my son about sleep. Right now it is in very short supply. Averages 5hrs, but has dipped lower. There were a few nights he said he went to bed at 3am, and was up at 5am. I asked him if this was self induced (wasting time doing things other than school work or mandatory...

    State of the Corp

Not sure how "old" the traditions that my son was looking forward to that they dropped are. He said there was no Plebe gauntlet after Marchback like they had for his class. He was also looking forward to getting his Plebe a welcome to the Company gift like he also got (I know this isnt a...

    Officer for the Green Berets?

As was stated, yes, you can eventually make it into SF if you have the drive to get there. That is the direction my son is working towards he is currently a Yuk. A close friend of mine has a son who is well down the path as a USMA grad. He started as an Infantry officer in the 82nd, then went to...

    Portal

Its ok. Some on this forum have seen a wide range of parental engagement. Some parents go far beyond what they should, and beyond what their child's wishes are, pushing them into a Service Academy. Seeing that enough tends to make some forum members cautious when they see parents pulling up...

Invitation to the Directorate of Admissions USMA Strategic Engagement and Outreach Visitation Program

I really hope you can make the visit. Its really important in the absorb the culture and and a chance to connect with some of the people you would would be at USMA with. My son visited both USMA and USAFA, and at the end of the day, connected better with the students at USMA and really enjoyed...

    State of the Corp

It was a very active thread in the USAFA page about all the changes the new Supe there made, pissed some folks off, but honestly from conversations I have had with some of my sons friends who are there, USAFA had gotten way to lax and a correction was warranted. Unfortunately, that thread kinda...

    State of the Corp

Thanks all for your input. I was not intending (and thankfully it has't) gone down the path of the USAFA "What's the jazz with the new USAFA supe?" thread. Just checking in with others who have been (or going through) the process. I am very glad my son is venting to us. I am also glad its just...

    State of the Corp

Understood. I have been advising my cadet to rally around his Company and boost each other up. Lock in and focus one day at a time.

    State of the Corp

That was a downer for my Yuk as well. Also the AS For Class 4 days a weeks isnt high on his list, but that sounds like getting back the the way its always been. He said its been a lot more mandatory meetings, drill, and such that are really eating into time he would rather be studying or working...

    State of the Corp

Anyone hear from your cadet (or cadets on this forum) that the state of morale in the Corp of Cadets is pretty low right now? Talked to my Yuk yesterday and he said morale is pretty low, lower than this time last year for sure. Frustrated that several old traditions have been taken away, and...

Process question: When does a cadet have to vacate his/her room after the semester ends?

This is exactly what our son did. Little trips to the trunk room, then after last TEE he was out. A couple times his sponsor would take him to Garrison and he would train down to the airport. Its pretty easy to do, and they get good at navigating the trains and such.

    Cadet attending away football games

If they are on a Spirit Pass for the game, they wear their uniform and stand with the other cadets. This is what my son did his Plebe year for the Army/Air Force game in Colorado.

What should I expect for the Summer

As has been stated before, they wont know the summer schedule until March. My son, currently a Yuk, so we just went through this this past summer, had CFT1 and Air Assault1 then came home to get his wisdom teeth removed. Several of his friends were on a similar path, but had an AIAD (three week...

    Nomination Tips

Great point. Know the reason you want to not just go to a Service Academy, but why you want to serve as an officer in the military. "Getting a free education" is a horrible reason (not saying thats your reason.) Practice interviews, but dont rehearse lines. Good interviewers will see right...

    Nomination Tips

As others have stated, be prepared. You should go through multiple rounds of practice interviews. Google "service academy interview questions" and provide that list of questions to your practice interviewer for guidance if they need it. For my son, he had three rounds of practice interviews...

    Match Back 2028

Congrats Class of 2028! It a great opportunity for all at USMA. My Yuk is looking forward to helping his Plebe navigate the West Point waters setting them up for success. Over the summer break, he was telling me how influential his Team Leader was, and how much he admires and respects him. I...

    Personal Computer USMA?

My son built a computer over the Christmas break his Plebe year, and brought it to USMA for personal use. His first semester roommate had one as well, and was on the eSports team. One thing to consider is size, you are very limited in both space in your dorm room, and storage. Cadets move rooms...

    SLE transportation questions

The ferry from Garrison to South Dock is only available to Military ID holders. Uber from Newark to West Point is doable, but expensive, and an Uber from West Point to Newark would be hard to get. By the time you spend all the money on the Uber, you could rent a car for a couple days, and have a...

    LOA's??

You can still do a half day visit to get a good feel for the culture, academics, etc. While the cadet candidate does their visit, the parents get a great briefing, and have an opportunity to sit with their Regional Commander. This was a great experience, and solidified my son's desire for West...
