    SMP 4 Year program

SMP is a great program to get a college degree & make decent money while doing so. But after college you'll have to be an Army Guard officer for a number of years & have little chance for active duty, if that's your aim. Benefits differ, state to state. Army National Guard is hurting for...

How did your child decide which universities to apply to for ROTC?

I told him which one to choose. Easy peasy. Kids would have much better lives if they let their older, wiser parents make decisions for them. At least until age 30. Still paying paying for Netflix & cell phones for 3 of them though, so I might be wrong.

Air Force SMP (I need some help)

I thought SMP was only for Army National Guard & ROTC. Great program, but I'm not certain this is for AFROTC.

When Plan A becomes something else...

An 18 year old high school senior who seeks to become a commissioned officer doesn't want to hear it might take until he or she is 20-21 years to begin that path. That seems like a million years. But it comes fast enough.

    Funny Vietnam era ROTC occurrence

Midshipman at Parris Island? A visitor of some kind? Or dependent? Obviosuly not stationed there. "The Drill Instructors conducted a quick investigation and got to the bottom of it." I'll bet they did!

    Military Recruitment Standards

JFK wasn't diagnosed with Addison's until after WW2 but he was a physical mess at the time of his joining the Navy in 1942. Scarlet fever survivor, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, urinary tract infections, prostatitis, severe back & spinal problems (worsened greatly by playing football at...

    Military Recruitment Standards

Much has been written about efforts of the US Armed Forces to recurit sufficient numbers in recent years. I read somewhere today that, if the John F Kennedy or Audie Murphy, in their physical conditions of 1942, tried to enlist today they would have be rejected for health reasons. From my...

    Funny Vietnam era ROTC occurrence

Kinda reminds me of Donald Sutherland n the Dirty Dozen, pretending to be a general (he was a disheveled private) while inspecting troops. "Very pretty, Colonel. But can they fight?"

    The Battle of Khe Sanh

One of my recruiters in 1981 was at Khe Sahn at the age of 19. He said it was only time in Vietnam he was regularly cold. He didn't mind the constant shelling but had nightmares for years about the rats that infested the mountaintop base. He had nothing but praise for the Air Force B-52s...

When General Douglas MacArthur "Stopped the War" to Celebrate Army Football Win vs. Navy

I knew MacArthur was powerful, but "stopping" the war (WW2) to celebrate a football victory? https://taskandpurpose.com/history/army-navy-game-1944-douglas-macarthur/ "At the height of World War II, though, both West Point and Annapolis were having some of their best years ever, and the...

For "Band of Brothers" (HBO, not the book) Fans

Video diary from Ron Livingston (Captain Nixon): Gotta love Dale Dye. Note: There will never again be a big budget series like this on TV again. Reason? They only made huge profits through VHS and, later, DVD sales. Which don't exist any more.
