I've read on this site about plebes "validating" classes during their first summer at USNA. Would someone please explain to me this process and the benefits/advantages to a plebe? Thanks in advance for your comments.

If a student is recruited for an intercollegiate sport, and attends a SA prep school for a year, is that first year of athletics considered his/her "redshirt" year? Would this student enter the SA with four years of sports eligibility left? Thanks in advance for your responses.
