Seeking help from A Split "Alumni" Parents

Our first sea-year, the Ensign was in the Pacific for Thanksgiving and in Guam for Christmas. He gave us a call on Christmas only because he thought it was cool he was on the other side of the date line and "Santa" got to see him first. The second sea-year, he was in the Atlantic for the...

    Why USMMA?

I know it's not a direct curriculum; however the Marine Corps Ops program will keep you physically fit and in the "Seal" kind of mine. Through the Marine Ops program, you can also apply to and attend jump school in Benning. Having your PTL 1 and jump wings under your belt would look good...

    Deck vs. Engine

My experience comes from the graduating Class of 2009. Deck Officers were still looking for jobs the 1st quarter of 2010. It took my son five months to find a job and that was "shaking the trees" everyday. As for Engineers, I think all had jobs during this same period. I heard of one...

    Sea Year Partners

My D/S spent his entire second sea term on the same ship with no sea partner. He was apprehensive, at first, but like KP said my D/S formed a better bond with the crews. In fact, several of the crew members, including both Masters, helped him get a job with their company...worked out great...

    Sea Year Gear List

I know my son obtained boiler suits from each of the ships he worked on to supplement his KP suit. As for boots, he had to go online to find steel toe boots in his size (16). If they need extra's they will be able to get it from the ship or from any of the ports they hit.

    Ring dance

I know several of the 09 Mids were part of a beauty pageant at a Polish Festival at one of the local townships on Long Island. They obtained their dates from there. Some will find local girls they meet at BHT. Others will ship in dates from home while some will rely on the generosity of...

    Upper Classmen

Hmmm...didn't know USCG was a "Military Service". I thought USCG fell under the Department of Homeland Security which actually makes it a Federal Public Safety type organization. So...now...with that being said, let's do away with the USCG Academy and send KP grads to FLETC to learn the...

Catching a flight for Thanksgiving or Christmas?

I miss read your post...sorry....I was thinking he didn't have a Friday class. There should be no reason for him not to be able to leave on that Friday afternoon. The only thing that would keep him from leaving early would be if he had a watch to stand or company/regimental duty to perform...

Catching a flight for Thanksgiving or Christmas?

This is where parents have to be the most flexable. I know it costs more to book late (trust me...we have been there) but you don't want to book early and then things "change". If it says " Friday after 1600", then I would book the flight later Friday evening. If PC doesn't have a Friday...

    Watch on parents weekend

We too had to work a visit around our Ensign being on Watch. Yeah…it sucked….but we got through it and had a great trip. Your PC needs to be the one to work out the scheduling. Don’t get involved. If PC can that’s great. If not, consider it training for when PC will be at sea during the...

    sea year 2nd time round

I'll tell ya that Deck Officers for the 2009 class had a hard time finding employment. That 32,000.00 helped our Ensign get through those first five months before he found a job. It not only helped him, but it helped us....:shake:

How to retrieve sea project from computer

I'm not a techie...with that being said...Ensign put his 2nd seayear project on his external drive. He copied the project to CD and carried both back to school with him. He had both so he didn't have an issue... Just sayin....:shake:

No Facebook, No Skype, No food, No printers

We're all not cut throat, heartless pirates here...arrrr..... First off...on team communications, I'm going to lay that one on the Academy coaches. Sorry...but having been a coach and knowing college/NCAA requirements, your PC should have received a packet prior to arriving at the...

What does it mean to be on watch?

Standing Watch is what us ground pounders called Guard Duty. There are several locations on campus where the PC's and Mid's stand watch. There are also several types of watch. This prepares the Mid's and PC's for standing mandatory daily watches on ships. I know this is broad but will at...
