Foundation is a great route to USNA as NavyHoops stated. My DS did a foundation year and I feel it made a huge difference. The stats on the success of Foundation kids at the Academy are very strong. We are also from NY . Happy to answer any questions you may have.

DS has ATT and it works fine. Only issue is where in Bancroft they live. Certain sections get very little service regardless of carrier.

Watches and Sunglasses are very popular items among my sons friends . My plebe asked for a running watch and a nice watch to wear while in uniform. He also asked for a few pairs of Sunglasses as gifts. They issue plebe's printers during Plebe Summer so no need for that.

We rented a house for PPW last year through Annapolis Accommodations that was close to gate 1 and had a parking space (very important as parking is brutal). It was not much more than a hotel cost wise and held the extended family. Plebe was much more relaxed knowing it was a 5 minute max walk...
