Zoomies are reporting that Navy v Air Force is canceled

This is posted in the Air Force forum. Certainly not official, but not good either.

    Permit to Report Website Updated

Permits to Report were meaile a couple of weeks ago, but the online resource at USNA.edu was still hosting Class of 2016 materials. It looks like the site has now been updated for the Class of 2017. If you need extra copies of forms in the PTR packet, you can find them here...

They're deploying "frickin' lasers" (said in my best Dr. Evil voice)

Interesting article from the Times today, detailing the Navy's deployment of a prototype laser weapon.

CSPAN Washington Journal Segments on the Naval Academy

CSPAN aired an excellent series of segments on the Naval Academy this morning, with contributions from Admiral Miller, Secretary Mabus, Senator McCain and others. For any prospective candidates, the discussion with Academic Dean and Provost Andrew Phillips should be required viewing, on par...

CNN Reports that the Blue Angels have canceled all of their 2013 performances.

Read the article here. It looks like the performance during Commissioning Week has also been scrapped. "The next performance still on the schedule would have been at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, on May 22, part of the graduation festivities at the academy."

    I-Day Flyover?

Among the many pronouncements of impending sequester-related doom, I have heard that the Blue Angels have curtailed their schedule and will not flyover Navy Marine Corps stadium during graduation. Has anyone heard anything about I-Day? I realize that the Blue Angels don't do the overflight on...

    United 364 Rivals 1 T-Shirt?

At last year's Army v Navy football game, they were selling a t-shirt that said "United 364, Rivals 1". You can see a picture of it here. The online store at phillylovesarmynavy.com seems to have been taken down, and I cannot find that shirt anywhere despite an exhaustive search. Does...

States with reported appointments so far

Scanning the 2017 appointment thread, it appears that there are 28 states from which no one has yet reported an appointment. See the list below. From what I gather, the admissions board moves through the process by slates within states. Could it be that these 28 states have yet to come before...

    Mid-year grades

Does Admissions require/want a refreshed transcript showing senior year performance to date? DS's has been pretty good (As across the board), and I was hoping that they would want to know about that.

    Service Selection Question

Assume for a moment that a firstie lists his/her service assignment preferences as 1) SWO, 2) Aviation, 3) Submarines. The latter two are, generally, highly selective. Is it possible that the firstie could be given Aviation, even if that's not what s/he really wanted? Maybe a better way to...

Do LOAs have an effect on MOC decisions?

DS is 3Qd and a recruited athlete. There is still a possibility that he will receive and LOA, even at this late date. I assume that, if he receives one, he should communicate that fact to the various congressional service academy coordinators. To what degree do MOCs take into consideration...

    Details on Naval careers

While nothing is guaranteed, DS and we (his family) sense that his application may be viewed favorably. What was notional and aspirational is suddenly starting to seem real and possible. He asked me last night if I could describe what naval officers (or specifically recent Naval Academy...

    Any advice on MOC interviews?

My son has has first interview with a member of Congress next week, one of our Senators. He's a bit nervous. Does anyone have any experience that they can share on what he can expect? I'm sure that it's a little different for each MOC, but some general experience would be appreciated. Thanks.

Can you refuse an ROTC scholarship?

This seems like a silly question to me, but my son spotted this on the NROTC application page. "If offered the scholarship, the student will be expected to attend the school at which their scholarship is placed." Like many kids, he is thinking about ROTC, but he's not sure about it. He...

SAT Scores considered for Official Candidacy

After DS submitted his Preliminary Application in the form of his Summer Seminar Application, he took the SAT a second time and his scores improved. Will the Naval Academy consider his improved scores in determining whether he will be an Official Candidate? I would expect that they would, but...

    BGO Recommending NROTC

My son's BGO recommended that he apply for NROTC as well as the USNA because the latter is so competitive. Somehow, this feels like a test of his desire to serve as a Naval officer, with or without first attending Annapolis. I did see the recent post about to what degree NROTC affects...

    Acronyms

Hi. I'm a parent of a prospective candidate and new to this forum, although not new to the general application process. That said, I keep seeing a lot of acronyms that I don't understand. What is a: BFE? DD? DS? CVW? (Is that Candidate Visit Weekend?) I think I have all of the other...
