For those who attended a SA, served, then left immediately...

Slightly different spin- Did my JO sea and shore tour and said I never wanted to cross the brow of a submarine again. I looked for other jobs in the Navy and tried to lateral transfer a few times and the nukes had their meat hooks in me pretty good. My third lateral transfer attempt I had my...

Restricted line and staff corps officers

Another possibility is a transfer option. My community (engineering duty) is doing it. Basically if you have a technical undergrad and get good grades, you have the option to automatically go into the engineering duty community, no questions asked, after your initial sea tour for SWOs and DH...

Restricted line and staff corps officers

I never understood how Seabee officers are considered staff corps. Thats the one group that seems far more combat oriented than the rest of the staff corps. If anything, they should be line officers.

Restricted line and staff corps officers

Good point. Have to have backup plans for lateral transfer.

Restricted line and staff corps officers

stella - you can also do your time as an unrestricted line officer coming out of USNA and transfer into restricted line. Generally, you have to complete your division officer tour and then you can request a transfer around the time your initial service commitment ends. Restricted line also...

Pre I Day Work Out Program

Search google for Navy Diver Warning order. It should give you a link to Navy Personnel Command, and on the right hand side download the Navy Diver Warning Order or EOD Warning Order. This is complete overkill, but if you can do this you'll be in the top 5% of your plebe summer class...

    Back up plan advice...

If he has any ambition of going nuclear, NUPOC is the best deal/scam in the Navy. You get paid E5 or E6 pay (cant remember) in college your last two years, dont have to do a thing and you go to OCS after and get commissioned. The best thing is those two years counts as active duty time and...

Investigation finds significant drug use, party culture at Naval Academy

How much of a specialized training do you need to understand that 1. drugs are bad and 2. any drugs are against the rules? It's a no brainer. Now the Navy wastes tons of man hours training bad behavior out of people.

7 Ways the Military is Wasting Money

This article is exaggerating a bit when it comes to GOFO staff and expenses. Only the big boys have a big staff. The majority of GOFOs (1 and 2 stars) have only one or two aides. Navy 1 stars don't have an aide billet assigned(they usually pick someone from their staff to serve as an aide)...

    Go Navy! Beat Army

My apologies, I may have misread your profile and cant see it at the moment on my iphone. However I stand by my comments. In a few months this young man will be lead soldiers probably into war. There's a lot of "**** screen" butter bars who have come before him and paid for mistakes in blood...

    Go Navy! Beat Army

First off, I said it looked pathetic, not that the QB personally was pathetic. Second, based on reading your profile and navygirl89's profile, I'm not going to justify my comments to a few children who have never been in an actual leadership position. If you think butter bars are negligible...

    Go Navy! Beat Army

Internetmate... At 23 I was driving a billion dollar submarine with about 130 crew onboard during a war. Compare that to a football game solely for entertainment purposes. Lets get real here, OK? What these young folks at the service academies do while in the comforts of Bancroft will...

    Go Navy! Beat Army

Back in my younger years, I used to love watching Army guys cry at the end of the game. Today it just looked pathetic watching the Army QB cry. First off, it's just a game. I know there's emotions, adrenaline, and testosterone, but come on.. Man up. Second we're still at war. What's he...

    Enlisted to USNA questions

You are correct, but I'm referring to other programs where your time in college continues to count for time in service. I've known a lot of people who have done these other programs going from enlisted to officer and there's great benefit to keeping your service clock running while in college.

    Enlisted to USNA questions

I run into enlisted all the time who ask me about the Academy and I always ask "Do you want to be an officer or do you want to be an Academy grad?" They're always confused at that question. I never recommend USNA to enlisted because your time in service counter stops once you start at the...

Use Me as an Example of what not to do as an ROTC Cadet

Wow, I saw the thread title and here I am the whole time thinking you did something like get an underage girl pregnant, start a drug ring, misuse government funds, lead a cheating scandal, or bring shame and discredit to the military service. But no, you did something far worse... you rode a...

    long term Opportunities

No disrespect, but isn't a little early for your son to be considering family life in service choice? There's a lot that happens between now and commissioning that will change. The Navy I joined when I went to USNA in 1998 is different from the one I was commissioned into when we found...

    Why?

My question was for service academies in general, not just USNA, but the USNA vs others is a good subtopic as well. I'm just a bit nostalgic considering my 10 year reunion is coming up soon and it is good to see that the reasons that I went to USNA are holding fast over other less important...

    Why?

So I am wondering why kids today want to go to the Naval Academy. Is it the prestige? The education? The Naval Career? What drives young folks to continue to want to attend the Academy? I graduated 10 years ago and I had my reasons for applying and going to the academy, but I am wondering...
