    USMMA - Concerns

If my student had it to do over, he would not attend USMMA. Graduation is is 433 days for him, assuming the school remains accredited. Good luck with your decision.

    LOA but no nomination

With everything going on at USMMA and the changes in the admission office employees, this may no longer be the case, but - - - I would suggest contacting your admissions officer at USMMA and discuss the situation. They are well aware of what congressional members have not used all the...

Does GPA determine AD at KP

Go ROTC - that is a FAR better route for your end goal.

    Principal Appointee / NMMI Question

Also, USMMA is unique in that you can get a nomination from ANY member of congress in your state - does not not to be your representative. So, both senators and ANY member of the house for your state. Finally, has student contact his advisor at NMMI and they can coordinate with USMMA to locate...

USMMA's Accreditation "May Be In Jeopardy"

The fact the the women came forward in the article is a positive one. It is an issue on every college campus and every federal academy. You cannot fault a victim for coming forward.

    Candidate Open House 8/26/16

Thanks KP Eng. Not meant to be innuendo dripping post. The MSCHE report requires that the accreditation warning be stated on the Academics page and I did not see it there. If it is there and not on a separate page, I stand corrected.

    Candidate Open House 8/26/16

Please enjoy the open house, and then weigh your options carefully and seriously consider the state maritime schools as well. USMMA is NOT a substitute or a "safety" if you fail to get into one of the other 4 academies. Also, please be aware that USMMA's accreditation is currently under a...

    Can midshipmen have cars?

There is a shuttle bus that runs to the train station that DS uses - $1-2 each trip. Forget which. Also, there are often seniors headed out and will drop people there. Team mates also often treat cars as community property. Where there is a will, there is a way.

Questionnaire for new students- aviation//flight school

The percentage changes every year. In all honesty, I am not very involved, my son is pursuing all his options and weighing his interests on his own. With that said, my understanding and "experience" says that active duty upon graduation is 100% student driven. There is no active recruitment...

    Midshipmen schedules

No real summer break. All told, DS has 5 days his first summer and a total of 7 home this second summer (he is B split). This is not a regular college with a regular college schedule.

Questionnaire for new students- aviation//flight school

Check the box that applies. DS has changed his mind at least 5 times since starting there and is currently out on his second sailing. They experience lots, are exposed to many options, and the AD slots each year change.

    Welding

Son enjoyed learning welding and did quite a bit of it during his first sea year (way better than scraping paint). IN fact, when he returned from sea term, he worked with teacher during his "free time" to earn a could welding certifications. Will it help his career? Probably not, but he...

    AP Classes / Exams

Never asked son for them. USMMA doesn't give credit for AP classes. Also, regarding GPA boost, if you credit out of a class, you do not get any grade at all. If you take it and get A, it helps with GPA. Those carrying one less class didn't always use that extra free time to study their...

    AP Classes / Exams

Don't care. Son did not even turned in exam grades. Except for English, son did not use AP grades to skip any classes at USMMA. This was a good decision- built up lots of GPA buffer Plebe and Sophomore year. Also, allowed learning to balance regiment, sports, and KP craziness without undue...

    MOC question

Yes that is correct. USMMA is unique in that any congressional member from the state can provide the nomination. Slots are allocated to the state, not each district, as they are for the other 3 nomination requiring academies.
