    Marion Military Institute

When my DD was a sponsored Scholar at MMI she was good friends with two young men who self prepped. The first ended up really struggling in physics at MMI and because of his grades he didn't get in. The other was already a strong candidate - he had the grades, scores and fitness. We assume...

Advice for creating a safety net?

DD applied to USCGA, USAFA, and USNA. During her congressional interviews she stated that her primary aim was to serve, and added that her first choice was USCGA, and also interested in USNA and USAFA. She received a nom to Navy. A few months later (in early February) she was offered prep...

    Pros to applying early?

Her desire to go to prep first is no reason to wait for regular admission. My DD applied EA 2 (There were two staggered EA deadlines a month apart. I don't know if they still do this.) She received her CGAS offer by the EA2 deadline. She wasn't waitlisted for anything.

    Plan b college is angry

My DD started at USCGA in 2014 and there was no kind of deposit or fee. She was expected to pay for her uniforms, computer, textbooks, etc., and those funds were to be deducted from her monthly stipend. I don't think there was even an option to pay for those items up front. Nicole

    Cadet fior a day

And for the women, a skirt would be fine but not necessary. My daughter wore black twill pants, a light blue sweater a black flats. She was fine. Its along the lines of casual Fridays in a law office, but not an ad agency.

    R-Day Worth Attending?

Regarding airports... Don't forget about Hartford (BDL)!! It is even a little closer to New London than Providence. We come from Michigan and never have a hard time finding direct flights to either Hartford or Providence, so we just choose the best price or schedule. I would pick these two...

    Offer to USCGA Prep/Scholars

My DD was a CGAS at MMI for the 13-14 academic year, she is now a 3rd class cadet at CGA. Just to expand a little on what has already been said, please forgive me if I am repeating information... 2 possible prep schools. Which institute? How is the decision made? I asked Daniel Pinch this...

    The Finest Hours opens today!

LurkingQuietly, Very Disney" as in ......??? Well, that is all she said. And she would laugh uncontrollably if anyone suggested she actually, you know, CALL HER MOTHER to discuss it. But if I had to guess, she meant it was formulaic, yet well-done and feel-good none the less. So, reviews I...

    The Finest Hours opens today!

So excited to see the movie! My daughter said the entire Corp of Cadets, plus the OCS students, all went last night to a "mandatory fun" pre-screening. Afterwards she texted her two-word review: "Very Disney". DH and I plan to go this weekend. Anyone else? Nicole

How to dump a varsity team at an SA?

My vote is to finish this season, then be done with the varsity sport. He is at a service academy primarily to learn to be a leader. Leaders don't quit on others in the middle an effort - at least not because it is effecting other areas of their life. If he bails, he learns that HIS needs and...

    MMI Packing Info

My DD took a sleeping bag - well, actually a lightweight fleece sleeping bag liner - and slept in that in top of her made-up bed. It was easy to shove in her trunk when not in use and that way her bed was always made. I think she kept it taught with bungee cords underneath the mattress. Also...

    XC Question

Hi Chiefsnow, congratulations on your swab-hood! You definitely don't want to bring anything you don't absolutely need, because you will be carrying it all over the place on R-Day - along with the huge seabag full of uniforms you will be issued. Fortunately you don't need any extra running...

    Applying to multiple service academies

My DD applied to three SAs. A lot of the application efforts were easily adapted to apply to all three - MOC interviews, training for the CFA, letters of rec. The academies seem to want a lot of essays and unlike the poster above, it did take more effort than simply changing the name of the...

    First Generation American?

I think your question may be a little confusing, as it can be interpreted two ways... Did being a first generation help me get appointed to prep school instead of being rejected altogether? Or Did it keep me from getting a direct appointment? Which is your meaning? While I of course have no...

    Cell Phone Service

My DD has Verizon and has no complaints. For what it's worth, she is still on our cell phone plan even thought we are in the midwest. We do pay her bill, though. Nicole

    Cosmetics at West Point

I don't think I would call either of those things cosmetic, or even cosmetic procedures.

    Did I Receive a Nomination?

Yes, it is possible for your MOC to nominate you to more than one academy. They could give you noms to all four if they chose. Nicole

    DODMERB... what happens?

Of note for female candidates... They also indicated that women would have a limited gynecological exam and could go to their own doctor for that portion of the test, so my DD did. This should be done before the DODMERB exam so the GYN report can be given to them at that time. This was an...

There are two prior enlisted in the class of 2018, assuming that all prior enlisted go through the Scholar's program. Grevar, do you have a average cumulative ACT score for the class? Nicole
