    Standards in Free Fall

It’s not just about “changing traditions,” it looks like an attitude of risk aversion. I’m not giving credit or blame for that to any one person, but it is the antithesis of the Robin Olds attitude.

I can’t speak to success in combat, but there are direct examples of POWs crediting their Academy experiences for sustaining them through captivity. I'm a reserve mission support officer in a mostly remote staff assignment. I’m about as far from a fighter pilot as you can get. But I fully...

    Danner - Tachyon v Rivot

I loved my Danner Tachyons on active duty. As a reservist, with the move from ABUs to OCPs I bought some cheapo boots and will probably replace them with Tachyons. I love my Danner Skyridge civilian hiking boots, spent all day in them on Saturday out and about with my Cub Scouts.

I think we marched to breakfast a few times, but it wasn't a regular occurrence. We had common GRs at 0600 for core classes, so they may have kept the pre-breakfast schedule clear for that.

What makes this painful for the Grad community is that we have been here before. No ****, so there I was... August 2005 The Supe, a Citadel grad who implemented sweeping changes after the sexual assault scandal, is on his way out. The Comm, a USAFA grad fighter pilot who would carry around...

It’s ok for training to be hard just for the sake of being hard, to push you to your limits and realize you are capable of more than you thought. I hope our leadership doesn’t forget that.

    Concerns about ALO Interview

I can get what I need to complete my evaluation in 30 minutes. If an interview is that short it means the candidate gave me the bare minimum answers and usually ends up with a very average eval. My strongest candidates end up at 1 hour +. They elaborate in their answers, tell good stories...

Why do people attend the Academy?

I'll echo Hoodlum... the opportunities are completely unmatched anywhere else in the world. The only catch is you have to put out the effort to apply, volunteer, and excel once you're at USAFA to get them. Here are the highlights from my experience: -Academics: Double major in Political Science...

    What's in the uniform package?

Only issued before deployment. If you go to Kuwait/Qatar/UAE for a summer you'll get them as a Cadet.

A few questions about USAF space operations careers

I'll second that recommendation- NRO is as good as it gets in government with an awesome mission.

getting your Masters after a Service Academy or ROTC without adding to your Commitment ? ?

There are 3 endowed scholarships that are the ultimate "good deal" from the AF, where your full time job is grad student on active duty for one year, and it adds nothing to your commitment. These are the Lawson, Wolfe, Nutter scholarships/fellowships...

    Commandant's Challenge

Can someone explain this to an old grad? Comm's Challenge used to be right before Thanksgiving, and Recognition was the weekend before Spring Break.

    Beginning of the Zoo?

I'm pretty sure "The Zoo" nickname pre-dates the big black fence. I definitely heard a "Look, mommy! There's one!" on the way from Vandy to the tailor shop once...

USAFA never received my CFA scores

This is a chance to learn a valuable lesson early on... The military will constantly lose or screw up your records. You are the only one who will care or pay attention, so make sure you stay on top of it.

Punching Out: Reflections on USAFA and 7 years on Active Duty

When I was a Cadet you could do an exchange semester at USMA, USNA, USCGA, and a handful of foreign academies. You generally apply during your 3 degree year and go in your 2 degree year for the US academies (I don't know anything about foreign ones). Its really competitive as only 10-12 Cadets...
