    Corrective eye surgery questions

Good advice above. My son had PRK between 2/C and 1/C years. It was successful, but because vision was very bad (greater than 8 diopters, if I got it right) in one eye pre-surgery, he was told he would not qualify for pilot. As MidwestDad says, rules and regs change, so keep on top of it...

    Got a waiver, good sign?

My DS was one of those kids who was DQ'ed, got a USNA waiver, then a TWE after being waitlisted for Class of 2018. He also received an NROTC waiver and did one year of college with the NROTC scholarship, reapplied to USNA, and received an appointment for Class of 2019. He did not apply to any...

Applying during 1st year college with NROTC scholarship

DS transitioned from NROTC to USNA with no problem. He will have the same obligation as his classmates at USNA. I don't believe an obligation attaches until the beginning of the second year of the scholarship, but I'm not sure about that.

Waiver at USNA - but not for NROTC?

DS was DQ'd and received USNA waiver in October 2014, before receiving a nomination. He did not receive NROTC waiver until October 2015, AFTER he completed O-week at his unit. He was awarded the NROTC scholarship in January 2015, if I remember right. We never figure out why the waiver took so...

    VA Nominations

VA-10. I did not post to discourage anyone. Anyone in VA-10 should know what a competitive district it is. My point was that there really is no way of knowing how things are going to go, even with two nominations. I would rather you be encouraged by the final result -- on the second try, he...

    VA Nominations

Congratulations to your son. After watching DS go through the process twice, all I can say is to tell him to do his best and hope for the best. DS interviewed with Senator Warner his first year but received a nomination from Senator Kaine the first year, in addition to receiving a nomination...

    Plebe Privileges

Our Plebe says he "banked" both weekends and hopes to come home next weekend. Yay! He had too much work after the Colgate game and had duty past weekend. So grateful they get some time away and that they can save the weekends for when they can really relax. Hoping he is able to bring a...

    Rollercoaster Round 2

If you have a waiver from last year, I would call DoDMERB to ensure USNA still has it in the file. My son was waitlisted for Class of 2018 after USNA granted a medical waiver. He reapplied to Class of 2019 and received an LOA conditioned on resolution of his medical DQ. Somehow the waiver...

Attire at USNA Chapel for PPW

Just got a call from the Alumni Association confirming our brunch reservation. They very nicely reminded me of their attire requirements. I mentioned we will be coming from church. Turns out I'll have to remind our guests that while shorts are allowed in church (ok, not the short shorts)...

    Letters to Plebes

Haha! I thought I had hidden mine in the package I sent (in the container holding a cooling towel). Oh well...

    Letters to Plebes

I think the detailer made my son put away the book light and headphones (what was I thinking -- they have access to no media of any kind!). With the heat what it is and possible delays associated with getting the packages to the Plebes, it would make sense to hold off on sending home made (no...

    Letters to Plebes

I read somewhere that detailers don't open sealed envelopes -- something about federal law related to tampering with mail. My understanding is they observe Plebes opening packages, inspect the contents, and remove contraband. In my son's case, he was allowed to keep something I sent that he...

    Rollercoaster Round 2

My recollection is that DoDMERB and any waivers are good for TWO years. Stay on top of that. DS was disqualified and received waiver for Class of 2018. He received an LOA for Class of 2019 conditioned on resolution of the DoDMERB disqualification, but once the waiver paperwork caught up with...

    Letters during plebe summer

So I bumped into two of DS's friends yesterday (twins) and told them DS would love to get a letter from them. I emailed them DS's mailing address, then later in the day bumped into the twins' dad and told him I had asked his boys to write DS a letter. He said, "no problem" as long as they had...

    Letters during plebe summer

We got a letter from our son yesterday. It was obviously written in haste, and he commented on how little time they have. He also commented that he had not received any mail, BUT it was dated July 4, and July 3 was a federal holiday, so the only mail day would have been the day after I Day...

Request for Insight Regarding Calculus Validation Tests

DS is looking forward to I Day but I was shocked to find out he has put off the calculus validation tests. When I asked why, he pointed out that he took B/C calculus his junior year of high school. He's a reapplicant, so he has a year of college under his belt too. He voiced some concern...

    c/o 2019 wait list

To second what MarineDadHopefulNavySon's posted, a member of our Senator's staff told me that about 40% of the USNA class of 2019 has been out of high school at least a year and that it used to be about 33%. Also, we've come to understand that DS is better prepared to be a Plebe after a year of...

    I-Day questions

DS plans to try out for football. Coaches have not responded to emails he sent a while back about his interest in the program. Appreciate any advice on how he goes about bringing and securing his cleats and any other gear he should bring.

2019 Permit to Report (PTR) Packages?

Guess we got lucky with a very civil 9:30 report time. From what I've read, though, those with an earlier time will suffer less stress than those who report later in the morning and have to be squared away by a certain time. Wondering whether there is any benefit to arriving earlier than...

    Sponsor family

We are just over an hour away from USNA (depending on traffic!). I've been told that DS will be assigned a sponsor family because we are too far away to be his. I think that's great. In some ways, I figure the sponsor families know better what to expect during Plebe year and beyond, whereas...
