    Post graduate careers

It's been a long time since I posted here, but I do still lurk. DD graduated with a straight Engine degree. She sailed both as a civilian engineer on NOAA ships and with an MSC contractor based out of Yokohama. When she transitioned to shoreside, she found a position as a factory maintenance...

    Indoc 7/2

If you read the information on the admissions section of the website at the links we have already given you, you will find out what you need to do (application, Congressional nomination, physical exam, fitness test). It will also tell you required minimum test scores. USMMA is a highly...

    Sports Recruitment

My daughter was on the XC and track teams. She contacted the coach directly, I believe. Or maybe he contacted her after seeing her high school activities on her application. I really don't remember at this point. I do know that her high school coaches were never involved. I think sports...

Completed App. How Long is the Wait?

Future applicants should be aware that the DODMERB process can take much longer than 11 days. Remedials or the need for a waiver can extend the process to months. Be sure to allow plenty of time for that even if you don't think you will have any problems.

    jobs after grad

My bad, I believe DD meant upgrading to 2E was the problem. A little knowledge can be dangerous. As I recall, it was the HP that was the problem. There was no way she could get the 180 days? But don't quote me on the specifics. I'm recalling a conversation we had a few months ago...

    jobs after grad

When you ask about NOAA, do you mean active duty NOAA corps or working for NOAA as a civilian employee? Commissioning into NOAA is an option for KP grads. But I think it is pretty rare. My daughter got a job with NOAA after she graduated. She is an engineer and was a member of their augment...

    Playing Basketball at KP

I'm going to echo what others have said here. Our DD was on the Cross Country and Track teams. The Cross Country team was her family at KP. She was able to get off campus and, as someone else pointed out, team members were team members, not 1C out to stick you. It's an escape from the regimental...

    Summer School question

Lagging is re-taking the course during the next regular term in addition to the regular course load. So on top of an already heavy load of difficult courses, the student has another 4 credit course that has already proved difficult for them.

    License

I don't know if they are letting those whose only lack is passing license walk and get empty tubes or not. They used to, but seem to be getting stricter about that practice every year. Our DD was a deferred graduate last year. She failed the license prep class and they would not even let her...

Past most Excellent Thread-How to get through a year at KP

It was a stressful roller coaster ride, with the final year nearly as bad as plebe year. But she is employed and really enjoying the rewards of all of that hard work. Her ship has been in and out of Boston over the last couple of weeks and she has managed to get tickets to 2 of the Boston Bruins...

    Sequestration

I can't speak to potential cuts at KP. But it is a misconception that cuts will not affect current budgets. My husband, a DoD civilian employee, has been told he will be furloughed one day per week for the remainder of the fiscal year. That will take effect 30 days after he receives official...

Unless they change something this year, which I highly doubt, you will need the TWIC before Indoc. You'll also need a passport if you don't have one. I believe they will also send you an immunization card that you'll have to take to your doctor's office to have them verify your shot record...

    SEALs/Kings Point?

No, she won't be making $110K - maybe half that depending on how busy she wants to be and how much over time she works. But she chose to work for NOAA for other reasons.

    SEALs/Kings Point?

Jumping in to this discussion late - and I'm not going anywhere near the arguments over funding. DD is a new 3rd engineer in the relief pool for NOAA. She is a few weeks in to a 6 week assignment in Hawaii. NOAA ships do not take KP cadets on sea year. Her shipmates assume that the new...

What a wild ride it's been!

Our roller coaster ride lasted a bit longer than most, though not as long as some. DD was a deferred grad. That meant we went up for graduation weekend and participated in all of the fun activities, but she didn't actually walk across the stage at graduation. She had a couple of requirements to...
