    Navy promotion idea

I joke with my O-3 (pilot) about how slow they are to promote considering Harry Bailey made O-5 something like 4 years out of OCS. Of course, there was a war on...

For cadets who are NOT recruited athletes, how do they get on/try out for sports teams?

Wish my kid had gotten into USCGA...the coach wanted him, but admissions did not. Should have had him apply to the other academies like his sibling (USNA '19)

Wearing uniform outside of ROTC events

We did the same (both DS, though) when our oldest graduated from USNA in 2019.

Campus Based Scholarships - Don't Give Up Hope!

Yep, my youngest who just graduated got a 3-year, last-minute campus-based scholarship to an out-of-state private school. Because he had that scholarship the school cut the cost of his first year in half, making it competitive with in-state, public schools.

How much money do you spend while on active duty?

Yep, and learn to live w/ roommates. My Seahawk driver is now living in a friend's house he knew from back in school & paying, IIRC, under $1,000 monthly in rent. Plus diverting 1/3 of his pay to his Roth TSP.

    Remembering 9/11

Excerpt from Bush's speech at the Flight 93 National Memorial: "After 9/11, millions of brave Americans stepped forward and volunteered to serve in the Armed Forces. The military measures taken over the last 20 years to pursue dangers at their source have led to debate. But one thing is...

Entering College as a Sophomore on a 3 Year ROTC Scholarship

Will the school itself cut you any breaks? My kid's $$$ private school offered a scholarship that cut the first year's cost in half once he was awarded a 3-year campus-based AROTC scholarship.

    WAKE FOREST ROTC

My oldest started there (4 year AROTC scholarship) but then re-applied to Army & Navy, moving on to USNA after his first year at Wake.

    Commissioning Questions

So everyone's kid went AD? My youngest has chosen to go Guard after graduation/commissioning next year. Does all the paperwork he'll get then tell him how to signup for Tricare Reserve Select? AFAIK he'll still be on our family coverage until he does so.

    Any truth to the rumor?

3-year campus-based AROTC scholarship for my kid. But once the above was awarded their private school cut the cost of the first year in half, making it competitive with public, in-state schools.

Military obligation contracted cadet once commissioned

Yep, my youngest (MSIV) says 10 years obligation after they complete flight school...longer than my USNA grad (AD, O-2) who is currently learning to fly rotary. Since the MSIV is going Guard they've been told after graduation it could be up to 18 months before they head off to Fort Rucker.

Bachelor's and MBA in 4 years while in ROTC?

MBA on your own dime is worth it from a top 10 school...otherwise have your employer pay for it later.

Can I reapply to USMA even after accepting a 4-Year ROTC Scholarship?

Yes, after not getting into service academies directly out of high school my oldest took a 4-year AROTC scholarship to a local university, re-applied to USMA & USNA, was accepted to both, & chose USNA...he was upfront with everyone that USNA was his first choice.

    Army ROTC to USNA

It's what my kid did...took the 4-year AROTC scholarship to a local university & then re-applied (& was accepted) at both USMA & USNA. He was honest with both that USNA was his first choice.
