    Interested in the Naval Academy?

Just had a few nice conversations with our 2020 mid and wanted to share some of what he said: “Dad, I’ve learned so much here. Not just academically but in every facet of my life. Seriously. I’m a much better person than I was when I got here” “oh, son, you’ve always been a great person!”...

    Pssssst. Parents for incoming plebes

Plebe summer isn’t easy. It’s tough for the parents too, but please don’t worry. Statistically, your kids will make it and be fine. Now here is the secret: the education they get is awesome! The experiences they have are amazing. Wait until you see your kid sailing in the summer sun with a...

    Summer Cruise -subs?

Our plebe put in for sub cruise this summer. Anyone know the odds of a plebe getting a sub cruise. He was considering flight as his number one choice, but might early select subs if he likes it so he wants to know as soon as possible if that's the route he should take.

    Arrival for I-Day

DS is arriving for I-Day on the 29th. We were told that he would stay the night in Bancroft. Will there be buses from BWI to the Academy the day before to get him there or should he go SuperShuttle?

    I-Day

We aren't attending I-Day. I know a lot of people will gasp in shock and horror, but frankly our DS is grown up enough to handle it himself. He went to NASS and his CVW alone. We're just dropping him off at the airport and letting him start this adventure without mom and dad. We will see him...

    Parents Club: none around here

The nearest parents club, according to usna.com, is based in a city about 6 hours, round trip, from our home. It's disappointing to say the least. We were hoping to meet parents from our area who have kids at the academy. Now it seems like there may be very few.

    Physical prep for plebe summer

Son has always been an athlete, (swim, cross-country, wrestling) and keeps in good shape with weights as well. He has been preparing for plebe summer by switching off running 5 miles one day and swimming 4 miles the next. He'll go to the gym and do rope climbs or climb the rock climbing wall...

    Dating between academies

Are there rules for dating between academies? Army/Navy dating. It doesn't seem like a good idea to me, but I'm a dad.

    In the meantime...

While waiting to hear or waiting for I-Day, fill out every scholarship application that you come across. My DS has been working feverishly, requiring even more letters of rec to get money. The scholarships can be applied to the ACE loan. One bit of advice I see repeated, or should I say regret...

    Standby for a message

DS accepted his appointment more than a month ago. Returned all of his paperwork from the BFE. Now he is getting tons of emails from various colleges telling him that his is a finalist for this or that scholarship at various schools. He feels like it is less than honorable to make the school's...

    Social Media

DS was told that the detailers will go through his social media accounts and anything he has posted on there that looks like he thinks highly of himself or braggadocious will be used against him. He is "friends" with several people he met at the academy during summer seminar and his cvw and so...

    Company assignments

I know everyone is worried about getting in right now, so I apologize for this question. Rumor has it that the commandant will (doesn't this come up every year?) shotgun the plebes into ac year companies after plebe summer. My son has been told that there are companies he wants to avoid. I...

    Nomination Interviews

We sat in the parking lot with our DS, as we live an more than an hour from the MOC's office, we arrived plenty early, and watched the kids arrive for their interviews. Kids sometimes don't realize how important appearance and first impressions are to folks. While this is our first go at it...

    LOAs

I've been trying to read up on the letter of assurance and it seems one thing is clear: no one seems to know anything. One baffling number I saw was that the USNA issues 1500 LOAs. However they are also reportedly rare. They accept 1200 into each class. So they issue more LOAs than they have...
