    Sea Cadets... Sound Off

My DS was a PO3 Sea Cadet, ranked 1 of 65 at his NAS JAX Recruit Training "Honor Cadet," and was 1 of 10 accepted last summer to the Special Warfare SEAL Training in Panama City, run by Navy Seals. He was 1 of 8 who finished and received his Trident Pin. Every Congressional Board was impressed...

Connection Between USNA appointment and NROTC scholarship?

ROTC is based more on merit than USNA. My brother is a Captain who sits on the Navy ROTC boards and said that in the application packages they did not know an applicant's race, gender, or ethnicity, it was strictly merit. USNA turns down more qualified white, males, due to the requirements to...

    Class of 2020 Shotgunned

That's good news for a lot of Plebes. Not sure when they stopped it, but I was a Plebe in '84-85 and we were dispersed throughout the Brigade after Plebe year. It might have been nice to have the same classmates you bonded with Plebe year, all 4 years, but for those that get "branded" a...

    THE END OF THE LINE...

Thanks for all the well wishes. When I posted yesterday, I hadn't talked to my son yet. We had a long conversation last night. He went through many emotions. Like someone else mentioned on the post, who had a similar lineage with the Air Force Academy, when you have focused your plans since...

    THE END OF THE LINE...

His grades and ACT were too high. They said he fell in that "middle" area. As a financial guy it reminds me of when people wanted to refi their houses that were underwater a few years ago, but the banks said, "you have to stop paying your mortgage for a few months and be a potential...

    THE END OF THE LINE...

Well, it has been fun everyone. Thanks for your input and comments since January. Checked the portal this afternoon (1:30 pm) like always and this time it was different. I had to do a double take... "Turned down by USNA" Since I have been having dialogue via e-mail with our Regional...

THE BLACK BOX - USNA vs NROTC admissions process

Those days are gone. My brother served at NAVPERS in his last tour and was Senior enough to be in the know on all the Navy statistics, as his job was placing personnel all over the world. He indicated that from a fiscal standpoint, females get out of the service at twice the rate as males, and...

THE BLACK BOX - USNA vs NROTC admissions process

AMEN to that. To be intellectually honest here, I had no idea the SA existed and got into NAPS due to football. For crying out loud, I had 4 C's and 2 A's my Sophomore year (and the 2 A's were in PE and Architectural Drawing!). I did pick it up my Junior and Senior years to graduate with a...

Class of 2020 USNA Appointment Thread

Congrats. I remember getting into Furman (turned it down to go to NAPS), then my brother got into Furman (turned it down to go to NAPS) and then my sister applied to Furman. The counselor there said, "we're going to get one of you in here." She ended up graduating from FU. I visited NAPS...

    Ranking difficulty

My son is still CPR at USNA and didn't apply to USAFA or USMA, because he already knows he wants to be a Naval Officer (I suppose my brother USNA '90 and current CO of NROTC Ga Tech and me USNA '88, plus his being in Sea Cadets and enjoying it, confirmed the Navy). He has a 4 year NROTC...

Class of 2020 USNA Appointment Thread

Zip, Nada, Nothing. 2 more days this week and then the final 10 business days til April 15th. My suspicion is that next week will be BIG, as I've had others notify me that their students have to reply to various schools by this Friday, April 1st, with a decision of acceptance, which would open...

THE BLACK BOX - USNA vs NROTC admissions process

Speaking of ND, I just read an article that said that 24% of their Freshmen class last year were legacy students. Wow! USNA is less than 5%. Seems like it could be much higher.

THE BLACK BOX - USNA vs NROTC admissions process

Not sure if I saw anyone say this, but I know a female who got in this year who maxed out 4 of the 6 PRT scores (on the male requirements), so clearly she meets the hurdle and she had awesome everything else. To me she fits the bill exactly of what I'm talking about. I won't go down the road...

THE BLACK BOX - USNA vs NROTC admissions process

That is very true! I suppose that is why they say to apply to at least 5. My son chose 3 hard schools and easier out of state university and one in-state. Got into 2 of the 5.

THE BLACK BOX - USNA vs NROTC admissions process

Hmmm... women make up 51% of our society, but not 51% of the SA. I get what you're saying, but the answer is not to reach down, but to search better via B&G officers to get better quality within that diversity to apply. If it's a LOTTERY then that defeats the purpose of the B&G. Why should I...

THE BLACK BOX - USNA vs NROTC admissions process

So true :) I did have someone tell us, they could let us know districts in other states, like Montana, that if we wanted to move a year ahead of time, our student could be a shoe-in. Didn't want to swap out Florida!

THE BLACK BOX - USNA vs NROTC admissions process

"Like the rest of the Navy?" The PRT scores are woefully lower in the "rest of the Navy" and the % body fat is much higher. Should our Midshipmen be out of shape? We don't want someone who is weight challenged not to feel accepted. I listed a process (NROTC) that seeks to have the most...

THE BLACK BOX - USNA vs NROTC admissions process

This might not be a very PC post, but since I do have inside sources, I think I can open it with authority. My brother (USNA '90 Captain), sat on two NROTC boards in P-cola this cycle (August until now) and brought up this issue to me. He said it will be a lot harder for my son (a white, male)...

USAFA vs. USNA (Lots of Questions)

USNA1985's response is probably the best to review. Remember that one service is based upon "the water" and the other on "the air." Don't go to one and expect to run from that fact.
