Does USNA assign a major with an appointment?

I just received an email from admissions saying that my application has been reviewed and deferred until first semester grades are sent in. What does this mean....good, bad? I got a C in an AP class first semester, will this reflect poorly on my overall competitiveness for appointment?

My Blue and Gold Officer said that I have been found triple qualified, yet they hadn't made a decision on my application (I have two nominations). I am new to this forum, so I apologize if there is already a post about this but what exactly does it mean?
