THE BLACK BOX - USNA vs NROTC admissions process

While I'm not sure where I stand on this, I just want to know why only MALES are required to register for selective service if all things are equal???

The new TWE - Sent by E-mail Poll

This is exactly how my oldest son was able to view the results of his CA state bar exam in 2012 and his WA state bar exam last fall (passed both!). You know when you walk in to the test room on day 1 when the results will be posted. Obviously a test is a little more straight forward than an...

    Stories from college reapplicants

So glad to hear this! My DS was class VP for one year -- said they did nothing (class only had 43 students) so opted to use his time and gain leadership skills outside of HS (Boy Scouts, community service organizations, etc.). He was team captain for 2 sports, but also concerned that not...

The new TWE - Sent by E-mail Poll

It's not an email to check portal, it's an email that says they can't offer appointment. No matter how well our children are prepared for disappointment, it still hurts. Yes, it is good to get it over with earlier in the process than drag on for another month with the same result. To quote a...

The new TWE - Sent by E-mail Poll

To clarify -- my DS was devastated -- he got the email just as he was finishing donating blood at the blood drive his Leadership group was sponsoring, so he was definitely not at 100% when he received the bad news! And he did go back to school for baseball practice -- took a little frustration...

Take Honors courses when you plan to reapply?

WOW!! I hope my DS's first year at college works out that well. We've wondered whether the time spent at ROTC would be better spent in other EC's if you are truly going to reapply to USNA. Anyone know how much time is involved with NROTC, not including the Naval Science courses you have to take?

Take Honors courses when you plan to reapply?

WOW! Very Impressive! That has been another concern -- that amount of time needed for NROTC makes it difficult to get involved with other activities. Anyone with NROTC experience who can provide info about the amount of time each week required, in addition to the Naval Science course you have...

End of the Line for USNA

Great posts -- I assumed the number of 2nd time applicants was high. We are letting the dust settle and thinking of the future, recognizing that my DS is having a GREAT senior year. The toughest part has been informing all of those who wrote recommendation letters, etc. that he didn't get in...

Take Honors courses when you plan to reapply?

Thank you! This is what i assumed, that you would mirror SOPHOMORE year classes. But IF you are admitted 2nd time, can you validate out of 2 years of classes? That seems unlikely.....

    Stories from college reapplicants

Anyone have list of SA prep schools? Hate to think of repeating senior year when he already has nearly 18 hours of college credit, but leaving all the options open before we commit to a Plan B school.

Take Honors courses when you plan to reapply?

And that is the problem -- no one will provide specifics for the TWE, so do you assume you have to improve across the board? They say to take classes similar to Plebe year, but since most of the candidates receiving TWEs already took AP/IB/college level courses covering the plebe year...

Class of 2020 USNA Appointment Thread

Just had to deal with the dreaded email today. Appreciate the wisdom of what you have to say -- everyone telling him "it will work out in the end", etc. ARE NOT helping. I think this is the first time I ever heard him cry -- I actually left work to bring him home from school at noon. Anyway...

End of the Line for USNA

My son's BGO was in shock -- felt he was the strongest applicant he had seen in long while. Already followed up with admissions -- stated the usual "very competitive class" and "smaller class size than in years past". Could offer no insight as to what the deal breaker was ... As everyone else...
