    VMI Class of 2028

@ArmyROTCApplicant - keep in mind that any tour is going to give you just a small glimpse of what life is really like as a cadet. It's going to be a challenge, but it that is what you are looking for it is the right place. Do yourself a favor if you decide to go and truly give it your all. It's...

    VMI Class of 2028

Doc, it's probably good that OP is nervous. To me that shows an awareness of what to expect, and knowing it won't be easy. I agree with Doc that OP should try to visit if possible. Having said that, the day my son matriculated was the first time he (and his parents) ever saw VMI. He graduated...

@Devil Doc - where is the wooden yardstick? That's what I used to get.

    Chances of getting into VMI?

As others have said, zero chance if he doesn't apply. He should learn as much as he can about life at VMI. It's the type of place you can get a lot out of if you want to be there but be completely miserable if you don't want to be there. He should take the lead doing the research and preparation...

    NPS Graduation gift idea?

Sub dad here of an officer who earned dolphins a couple of years ago. Agree with others about nothing with dolphins yet. Service or uniform related items as gifts is tough for a parent, especially parents (like me) who do not have a military background. Some of the things we think would be cool...

What do people do in between graduating and actually starting their service commitment?

This is one of the big differences between SA and ROTC. Our SA DD got pay and benefits upon graduating/commissioning and did temporary assignments until her school slot opened up. Our ROTC DS had a 6 month gap between graduation/commissioning and TBS where he received no pay or benefits and had...

    NROTC plan B?

You have received some informative responses to show that the information your DS was told is false. One thing that strikes me is that even if it were true, you stated NROTC was plan B. Why would he abandon plan B even if what he was told was true? That would eliminate one option to commission...

VMI funding, scholarships and more questions

You've asked this question a few times here and also on the ROTC forum. At this point, instead of questioning why, a better use of your time and energy may be accepting this and spending energy on things you can control. You seem to be clear on not wanting to commission, which is absolutely...

    I'm thinking of bailing

OP - Don't bail! You will have plenty of time to decide if this is for you or not before you make a commitment to serve. Make an informed decision later, not an emotional one now. In a few years, whether you stay or not, you will not regret giving it an honest try. You applied for a reason and...

    NSI - support for parents

^^This... Consider this short separation a "warm up" for future separations. We went through this with 2 kids and know how you feel now, but it's part of them growing up and living the path they have chosen. Mine are both active duty and we have been through many of these separations including...

Important matters concerning the existence of Humanity - BACON

Bacon thread needs a bump...Saw a recipe for sweet potato and bacon kabobs. Alternate chunks of sweet potato and folded up 1/4 strip of bacon on metal skewers. Coat with a brown sugar mix (brown sugar, spices, red pepper flakes). Grill for 30 min until potato is soft. I plan to try it this weekend.

    Favorite Candy Bar 🍫

Some have mentioned red wine and/or bourbon with chocolate. I really don't like chocolate so I will have a glass of bourbon (neat) and a glass of red wine to wash it down and leave the chocolate for all of you...

    First Submarine Assignment

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but If he/she did a sub cruise/Protramid, they should have at least some sense of what it's like being in a sub, correct? I realize this would be a short amount of time, but should give some idea. When my sub officer child finished a 6+ month deployment this was...

Ask Me Anything: Rat at Virginia Military Institute

Also, answer any calls from unknown numbers. As Rats are signing up for classes and other administrative tasks kindly staff members have been known to allow a Rat to use their phone to call home. Also, if they go to a local church on Sundays, church members often allow Rats to use their phones...
