    regretting applying early action

It's good that your DD is retaking the ACT; Dec 10 is the last test date for scores to be considered by the CGA. It's also good that she has a "Plan B", as Academy admissions are very competitive this year. Hang in there; the Academy has until Jan 20 to send out the last letters for EA...

air battle manager and weather officer

As a former AF weather officer, I can say that having a weather AFSC does not lead to a lot of career and promotion opportunities in the Air Force. Furthermore, a degree in meteorology requires a LOT of upper level math and science classes, so it's a long hard slog no matter where you go to school.

    Swab summer question

VA Parent, Shellz answered your question, but consider joining the Coast Guard Academy's Parents Association 2015 Message List. It has info about cell phones and much, much more. It will be a lifeline for you while your son/daughter is at the Academy, especially during Swab Summer...

CGA Incoming class expected to be most diverse ever

Shellz, It makes no sense for the Academy to recruit desirable candidates (in this case, URMs and women), only to let them fail once they're cadets. The Coast Guard Academy has finite resources, and they've already said that if the pilot orientation/intervention program is a success...

CGA Incoming class expected to be most diverse ever

1EagleDad, I'm troubled by your assertion that somehow only white males are qualified to lead the Coast Guard. Surely you don't think that military leaders such as Colin Powell and Eric Shinseki are somehow sub-par, simply because they're not white? I'm sorry that your son did not gain...

    Can this really happen?

I think the father engaged in a bit of hyperbole. USNA will consider many factors, and a misdemeanor may not be a showstopper, assuming the applicant is well-qualified in all other aspects, and has taken steps to redeem himself. It really comes down to: Character counts, and words and...

    Not flying United again

Son just informed me that Delta lets active duty military traveling on orders, (including CGA cadets) use their airport lounges, gratis. Maybe it's time to switch airlines....

    Swab Summer Banking/ATM Card

Last year, I sent my cadet to R-day with an ATM card for his personal bank account and some cash. He was able to withdraw cash at certain times (Mystic Flag ceremony, Eagle, etc.) during Swab Summer without incident. I know he didn't have unrestricted access to an ATM, but funds were never an...

It's In The "Back Of My Mind"

Cadet Attention I have vivid memories of a very shy six-year-old crawling under the table at Applebees when the waitstaff came over to sing "Happy Birthday" to him. So, I was both proud and amazed over Thanksgiving break to see my 4/C accept, with humility and grace, a handshake and a...

    "The Wait List" Club.....

If you want to re-apply next year, it may be worth talking to an AAP about what you can do to strengthen your application. Any feedback your AAP gives will be helpful to you in the future, as you will probably go through a competitive selection process (for school, scholarships, jobs) again...

My chances to get into WP?

Your SAT scores are just slightly below the average for incoming WP classes in recent years, so my opinion is that you're still very competitive for an appointment, even with these scores. Take a deep breath, go over a few more practice tests, and retake the SAT. You could also try taking...

    Grad school!!!

In addition to a Master's degree, officers must also have the appropriate Service School (professional military education) completed to be competitive for promotion to O-4/O-5. If you're not attending PME in residence, doing it by correspondence may be almost as time-consuming as getting a...
