Help! My parents don't want me to be a pilot after graduation. How do I convince them otherwise?

While working like half a month. The poster should tell mom about the family flight benefits.

    Lent and Service Academies

As a Catholic I would add that Jesus most likely understands when circumstances might cause you to stray slightly. He’ll look more at the big picture of abiding in Him and how you treat others, especially the less fortunate.

We've talked about whether having an HSSP Scholarship can help get you into a good school, but what about the inverse?

Will the timing work? With early decision or admission aren’t you down to maybe two or three boards to meet?

    College Advice

In your first paragraph, it sounds like you have the AFROTC scholarship in hand. But the second paragraph sounds like you're waiting for board results. Do you have an AFROTC scholarship right now or are you waiting for board results?

Anyone's children get notice of when their AFROTC flight training might start?

Young Adults Remaining on Health Care Benefits of Parents, even without being a student, to age 26?

We alerted him to this question because a college kid doesn't think of these issues. He (a college senior, not a 2nd Lt) is going to talk to his commander to find out details while we are waiting to find out the answer to see if we need to add him to our coverage somehow, thus the collective use...

Young Adults Remaining on Health Care Benefits of Parents, even without being a student, to age 26?

We're still trying to get a firm answer on if my AFROTC son has coverage between commissioning this May and when his flight training starts, and to what extent that coverage is (e.g., does he have to go to a base, etc.).

Young Adults Remaining on Health Care Benefits of Parents, even without being a student, to age 26?

I believe so but check with the company. Tri Care doesn't allow it though.

Cal Poly AROTC PMS Arrest (Innocent until proven guilty - but does not look good)

And people wonder why AD women question if there’s justice in military responses to acts against women. I’d bet there’d be a different outcome if he’d been looking at young boys. Or if he was an O1 or enlisted

    USAF vs USN. Help!

I don’t believe the four years at the academy count toward the 20 year retirement from AD. And I respectfully disagree with the leadership comment. I’ve had three go through AFROTC and they’ve all had great opportunities to be leaders. Conversely some of the Academy cadets we’ve hosted or...

    USAFA Grad Crowned Miss America

My fault on that one. Still pretty impressive that she got a pilot slot along with the rest of her accomplishments. Our sponsored cadet knows her and says she’s one of the nicest people anyone would meet.

    Recruiting woes

I was considering 18 year old E1s since the article was about recruiting enlisted. Per the DFAS site: Basic pay for an E-1 with less than 4 months of active duty is $1,865.10. An 18 year old can make more at Costco. I’m not saying that Costco is a better opportunity all things considered but...

    USAF vs USN. Help!

Sounds like you’re making a well informed decision. It’s interesting that you feel the Academy is better suited to you personally to help you be a leader. If the structure is what will help you then maybe that’s the better decision. My three kids are all good leaders but thrived in the AFROTC...

    Recruiting woes

Maybe the military needs to consider increasing pay and benefits, to be more competitive with the private sector that appears to be more attractive to kids looking for jobs right now.

    USAF vs USN. Help!

You also need to consider going to a regular college experience as opposed to an academy experience. Have you visited USC? If not, you need to. My son was in the same boat - USNA vs. USC AFROT. He chose the latter and loves the experience of being a regular college student, the academics of USC...

    AFROTC and Gap Year

As I understand this issue, your AFROTC scholarship cannot be put on hold. You would have to reapply. If you don't have a scholarship and were joining once you got to college, then it shouldn't be a problem. You can always visit the unit and talk to them.

    USAFA Grad Crowned Miss America

I don't know why this would be bad press: - Air Force Academy graduate - majored in Astrophysics- Truman Scholar - Air Force Pilot - founded org f/ cancer research - enrolled Harvard Kenney School of Govt - Miss America

    Past, Present and Future..

Did you receive an AFROTC scholarship? If so, then you only need to come up with housing. Have you thought of your local CU college? You can live at home. They also offer various scholarships you qualify for (I teach there). You come from a good school (my kids went to SMHS) and if you're a...
