    AIM question

Absolutely reach out to coaches! We had already met them during a CGA visit but we both met coach again right after AIM was completed on Friday. I thought there was coach time scheduled during AIM. I think it was over lunch but don’t quote me on that. You should constantly send updates to...

    NAPS ‘20 LOA Question(s)

The collared shirt and casual dress slacks are in reference to “liberty” clothes. My son started out with khakis and a dark blue polo shirt but they end up wearing regular college kids clothes. Athletic wear or casual nice clothes. At NAPS they are in some type of uniform (casual or formal)...

Newbie Dad looking for ground floor help - admissions

In addition, have her look at attending Bear Day events and applying to the AIM summer program in her junior year. Event information can be found on the USCGA website.

    USCGA scholar program?

My DS is in the current CGAS program. They call this opportunity “the golden ticket” because of the experience these kids get before going into the academy. I can not say enough about what a wonderful program this is and how great the CG administrators are. You learn how to balance the military...

No interview request.. Is that a bad sign?

Hard to know how many slots are left. Current CGAS kids who are at prep schools have not received their notifications either. They are supposed to hear soon. I know it’s hard to wait but there are still a lot of balls up in the air behind closed doors in the admissions office.

    CGAS - NAPS support

Notifications for prep schools will come out in the coming months and I wanted to let the CGAS NAPS families know about two support Facebook pages. There is a closed “NAPS Class of 2020 Parents Only” Facebook group and a closed “NAPS Class of 2020 - Midshipmen and Coast Guard Cadet Candidates...

    NAPS ‘20 LOA Question(s)

@Bigj102 - Congrats! I have a son currently at NAPS and it is a wonderful experience! Official report date hasn’t been posted but last years report date was Tuesday, July 24th with an open house on Monday, July 23rd. Once you get your final waiver go on to Facebook and signup for “NAPS Class...

    CGAS appointment

@laxerc - NAPs is a little different because it is on an active military base and is run as a military prep school. Set schedule from early morning until lights out at night. Some liberty on weekends but with military regulations.

    CGAS appointment

Last year, my DS received his prep school assignment in mid May.

    CGAS appointment

@laxerc - First congratulations!!! My son is currently at NAPS with the CGAS program and it’s been the best experience. Your intended major should not have a factor about which prep school you get assigned to. If you are a recruited athlete, that might be the deciding factor. The academics...

    Newbie question about prep schools

@Survivor - Your son will report to the Coast Guard Academy first to get sworn in and do orientation (a version of swan summer.) GMI & MMI kids stay the entire three weeks before reporting to their preps but NAPS kids only stay for one week before they have to leave and get sworn in at NAPS...

    CGAS and sports

Congrats @CGAS proud mom to you and your DS! Its a roller coaster ride but so thankful my son was given this opportunity. Please pm me if you have any questions. My DS was a recruited athlete last year and is now with CGAS as Cadet Candidate at NAPS. You will accept your admissions before...

    Reevaluated or prep route

@Kendall - my son probably knows her friend! They are all very close at NAPS. After going through INDOC, they all have each other’s backs. Definitely available for questions when you have them. Congrats!

    Reevaluated or prep route

CGAS is not a “guaranteed” spot. You have to complete the program without getting in trouble and meet the GPA requirements. You resubmit an application and essay, and DOD requirements. If you meet these requirements then you most likely will have a spot.

    Reevaluated or prep route

My son is CGAS at NAPs and it has been a wonderful experience! Many people call it the golden ticket. A great growth year to experience the military life combined with academics and sports. They are commissioned with the CG and use part of their salary to pay for uniforms and other expenses...

    Newbie question about prep schools

My son currently attends NAPs and was assigned there by the Coast Guard Academy for a year of prep school. The Coast Guard does not have a prep school so they send their CGAS (prep program) kids to three different schools. NAPs has 19 coasties there this year. The majority of kids at NAPs are...

    Car insurance

Thanks for all the great advice! I talked with another person at USAA after your postings and they did recommend to keep him on but as “non-operator.” Significantly cheaper!

    Car insurance

He won’t have his own car but he can use my car during break. USAA put him on a “named non-operator policy on my account which did significantly lower the insurance. I’m asking around because I’ve gotten different answers each time I talk to someone new at USAA.

    Car insurance

Will cadets need any type of car insurance while they attend the academy and CGAS? My son will not have a car so I’m taking him off my insurance but does he need to be covered to drive anything at the academy?
