    Where to go from Separation

Hey, all, Member of the class of 2022 here. I want to graduate from West Point more than anything and become an officer, but it seems I will more than likely be separated for an issue I don’t have control over. Note I never had any problems with the honor code and my separation isn’t...

    Yuk! Ask Away

Hey, forum! I’m a recently-christened yuk here and ready to answer all of your questions. They can be about any aspect of the academy or plebe year, or even admissions. I’ll be happy to give everybody pointers, and if I can’t answer your question myself, I will ask another cadet. I also happen...

Is the "Computer Preference (Optional Package)" worth the $400?

I don’t use anything from the package. Some cadets do but many don’t. If you’re interested in playing video games or watching movies with a group, a lot of people like the monitor. I don’t think I’ve ever actually used mine, though.

    Current Plebe; Ask Away

Cadets are allowed to take what’s called a spirit pass to go see Army teams play! You will not travel with the team, but sometimes other travel options (like the boomerang bus) will be available. You can go out of state if you’re on pass.

    Current Plebe; Ask Away

Funny, I actually get asked this a lot by cadet candidates when they come to visit. In my personal opinion, cadets have way too many outfits and hats. But, hey, that’s tradition. Full dress: only the most formal things i.e. graduation if you’re a firstie, etc. Over white: summer Over grey...

    Current Plebe; Ask Away

You should be striving to get the best GPA you can while applying, but mine was pretty low and some of the people I’ve told here were surprised I even got in with it. It’s not the be-all-end-all, but if you have a low GPA like I did, you’re gonna need a lot to compensate for it.

It was totally live but it was over a wall :)

    Q & A

A couple of us tried to do that but our cadre wouldn’t let us give anybody extra time. It seems the protocol might have changed in terms of call length and time span.

    Q & A

That’s just wrong. His cadre must’ve been bad.

    Q & A

Keeping a tiny knife on you is a good idea because you’ll have to open up a lot of MREs second detail. I recommend also having a screwdriver for setting up the combat helmet, bringing a roll of duct tape to care for your FLC, your own toothbrush and toothpaste, comb, and shower stuff. Keep it...

    Q & A

@Parent of 4 is right. Everything happens off of other peoples’ phones until Beast is over.

    Q & A

You’re welcome! I really enjoy helping people with whatever perspective I can offer, especially because I’m on the inside now and feel like I could have used this help a while ago. As for what’s easier, physical tests. I expected the APFT/DPE classes/sports to be harder than they are. Na...

    Q & A

Yup. Took me a while to get that grapevine rope down! Instructor patted me on the back, said “zero, but high, cadet ____, keep working on it!” and we were both smiling the whole time. DPE is rather unpopular between cadets but I personally like them.

    Q & A

I’m actually glad somebody asked this because I think I might be one of the cadets best-suited to answer this question. The reason why I say that is because I have a history of struggling with academics, graduating high school with a relatively low unweighted GPA (it was below a 3.0). At West...

    Q & A

During beast, your cadre are literally required to give you phone calls. It is not optional for them. During first detail, you’ll get a 10 minute call somewhere around the week-and-a-half point. Then during the ice cream social you can talk to them for as long as you’re at a sponsor’s house. At...

    Q & A

Plebe weekends are a little dreary, especially during the dreaded “gray period.” But there are cool things to do on the weekend! There is a theater in Mahan hall that plays the latest films. You do have to pay admission but it is fun to go watch a movie with your friends—I saw spider-man with...

    Q & A

I thought I did less training than just about everybody else but it turned out that I had done a lot more in regards to Beast-specific training. I began training for Beast two years before it started. Running is important; I was glad I never fell out of one because there are formation runs and...

    Q & A

I did not go to SLE, and I actually don’t really believe in it. I see it as more of a recruiting tool; I think your best bet is to visit during the AY as a cadet candidate. That’s just me though.

    Q & A

All, Every once in a while, I like to host q & a sessions to make sure everyone has answers. After all, that’s what this site is for. I am just about finishing up my Plebe year with half a semester remaining. I will answer questions about things I have experienced so far or share unclassified...

What More Can I Do To Make Myself More Competitive? Tips?

Yeah, of course. I didn’t make this mistake and I’m very glad I didn’t even consider it. I actually didn’t even think of it as an option when choosing clothes for my visit, which I suppose is fortunate. Don’t do it—the reason for this is not because cadets don’t like JROTC kids—they do, in...
