    Dating at the academy

Welcome to the Coast Guard. Don’t worry, the normal women generally aren’t interested in the weird Academy people. Also, to be fair, the average ACT at conn is significantly higher than CGA

For cadets who are NOT recruited athletes, how do they get on/try out for sports teams?

Contact the coach. There likely won’t be any published try outs at any point. Then once the year starts any upperclassman in that sport can help figure out how to join/try out, but if it’s a fall sport you will have missed part of it already if you don’t contact the coach now.

Lol. He’s talking about conn college. The school across the street from the Coast Guard Academy. The Service Academy this page applies too..

DS plebe needing psychiatric services "beyond" WP

Ignoring the ignorant child… Tricare and military healthcare is very good at EVENTUALLY getting you the care you need. It can be tricky to figure out and you will need to advocate for yourself. Each area has a health benefits advisor, HBA, they are extremely helpful in helping you navigate the...

To load up on spring term classes before academy or not?

What major? Validating chem and physics is a massive quality of life improvement. Depending on major, validating calc is the move too. If he’s a manegement major take finance and accounting now. The academy is a wonderful place if you aren’t getting smashed by academics.

Anyone with experience with USCGA Flight Team?

The academy life is not much of a barrier to this. The flight kids routed for permission to leave whenever they want to go to flying lessons. Things change but a few years ago it was one of the biggest boondoggles around. And they just took the cadet vans so transportation wasn’t an issue...

    Wisdom teeth removal

But if you get them out on a Monday you are ready to have fun on the weekend and don’t wreck a weekend… I got mine out on a Monday a week or so before finals and it was the greatest thing ever. All the learning was over and it was just projects. So I skipped class for a week and did my projects...

    ? About voting for cadets

The hardest part about voting at CGA is getting a stamp for your ballot.

? Regarding cadet travel paid by CGA

The exact amount is the same as BAS. Copied from DCMS: 2023 Cadet COMRATS. The subsistence allowance is applicable when in a leave or temporary duty status and is equal to the daily rate for an enlisted member receiving Basic Allowance for Subsistence (ENL-BAS). Daily Rate $15.085 Current...

? Regarding cadet travel paid by CGA

Again, CG will pay the constructed cost from assignment to academy up to the cost of your plane ticket. Obviously money goes straight to the cadet, and requires them to actually complete their travel claim which takes like 10 minutes.

? Regarding cadet travel paid by CGA

If you pay your own way you will get up to the constructed cost of travel for only your ticket or your miles. You can go here to find that value: https://www.gsa.gov/plan-book/transportation-airfare-pov-etc/airfare-rates-city-pair-program It’s confusing and I’m not sure how much money you get...

    CGA First Assignments to graduates.

The problem is that as they shut down the 210 fleet there physically is not enough rack space for graduating ensigns to go to ships. And the OPC release is anything but regular. Probably won’t see an operation OPC for another year at least, much less a commissioned one. I know they can just...

Thoughts/experience/advice to share regarding enlisting when receiving a NO for EA.

The CG has critical rates, ie rates that don’t have enough 3rds. For these rates you can sign when enlisting to go straight to A school upon graduating Boot Camp. There is a reason the rate is critical, and it is usually because retention is particularly bad for it. However, for ET it is pull...

What are some steps I need to be taking right now to make being accepted into the academy a reality?

You could go MARGRAD, graduate in three years if you are as good at school as you sound, and have a commission at 19-20. And be a better DWO than any academy grad. Or you could start margrad, go to the academy after 2 years, and commission at the normal age. Or do junior college. But you...

Having trouble deciding between The USCGA and UNC Chapel Hill

Ive got a lot to say. I’m glad to hear AIM was intense, that’s how it should be. Hopefully you’ve realized that the cadre were just messing with you and have gotten over having your feelings hurt, it’s a valuable skill whether you serve or not to accept criticism (regardless of its deserved)...

    Nomination Question

Yes. More noms is better. But one is enough. Senators usually give there noms to more competitive people who are slam dunks.

Best time to visit if you can’t do both: R-day or Parents Weekend in Fall?

Day 1. Can’t speak to the parents experience but day one was basically the most traumatic day of my life and I am glad I had my parents to see me off. A lot of people get super stressed out before swab summer, (if they know what’s coming) and if that was me I wouldn’t have wanted to be traveling...

    PFE

By definition half the class is below the median, not the average.😀 On a serious note, PFE scores are the greatest predictive indicator of injury during swab summer. While getting your score better might be advantageous to admissions (I would assume anything over 200 is basically the same)...

    What happens next?

Not everyone’s teeth come out, or maybe just two for some people. The week I got my teeth out at school was sweet, I didn’t have to do a thing for a week and if it was worse I could have stretched it longer. Missing class isn’t as big of a deal as you might think, especially post Covid where...
