    Plebe summer - lax

Definitely do bring your equipment. My DS was advised by the coaching staff to do so (2018). We were able to drop it off prior to I Day (afternoon before I believe). They have lockers available for incoming plebes to participate in summer sports. My DS really enjoyed that part of plebe summer...

    Naval Academy Club

Completely disagree. We joined last year and have eaten at the Naval Club with our Midn numerous times. We have been able to share a nice diner with him and a number of his friends at least 5 times so far when they were not allowed off-yard (particularly on Friday nights and Sundays). We have...

Handy Links for Appointees & Parents

My DS’s first letter home simply said: “I did not cry on the night of I-Day...I believe you owe me 40 bucks!” Below this one line he had his 3 roommates sign it. I had forgot that while playing one of our last basketball games together a few weeks before, I told him that I read a detailer’s...

I Day and HS School Graduation

Our current USNA Plebe gave his HS graduation speech titled “Don’t Give Up The Ship”. It got an ovation and our family will remember it for a long time. If you can do both, you definitely should. They don’t sleep that well the night before anyway!

    Citadel Honors VS Service Academies

If you are considering a full military career, there may be a longer term difference. In the USNA Superintendent’s talk at Johns Hopkins, he cited 2014 statistics for Naval officer ascension. USNA grads supplied approximately 30% of all Naval URL officers, but accounted for ~40% of Captains...

    Plan B schools

Update: My DS accepted his SA appointment last year. He withdrew/declined from all other offers as well as the other SA. However, we convinced him to contact admissions at the state flagship engineering school. They were more than happy to agree to hold his spot with a deposit through plebe...

    How to present packet

Our Senator MOC packets were all online. However, my DS hand delivered his MOC packet directly to his Congressman’s SA rep. This must have made a big impression as he let my DS know that this rarely happened and he had passed this info directly to the MOC and they took note.

Just Announced - Navy v Notre Dame, Dublin, Ireland 29 Aug 2020

We plan on going! Do the Mids who get to travel over get any “liberty”? My DS Mid will be turning 21 that week!

    USNA vs. NROTC

I agree with almost all MidCakePa said. The only issue I would take is I have often heard that once 6 months to a year in, there is little difference between the USNA and NROTC pathways. However, if you are considering a full military career, there may be a longer term difference. In the USNA...

    Unexpected LOA...

My DS was in a similiar situation late last summer with an LOA in hand to the USMA. USNA was his clear first choice at that time but he would have been happy attending either. The USMA field officer and regional Admissions rep were Very hands-on and made it abundantly clear they wanted him to...

    Counselor is leaving

Our DS’s counselor also left after Junior year. We were also worried that this transition would complicate things as he had a great relationship with her. We had the prior counselor communicate with his new one and everything worked out well. Good luck!

Boys State or NA Summer Seminar?

Thanks! Yes. Although he always had an interest in the military, it was not until he attended Boys State that he decided this was the path he was called to follow. It was obviously too late at that point to attend either SA’s SS and he had to really catch up with the process as he could not...

Boys State or NA Summer Seminar?

Boys State was actually the reason my DS decided to attend an SA. I do not know how many pts it was worth on his applicion but it was life direction changing for my DS. He was offered appt. to USNA and WP and will “happily” be reporting to the USNA this summer. He did not attend NASS but was...

Invited to Boy's State but not attending

I am not sure of the weight that each Academy awards for attending Boys State. However, I will say that BS was life-course changing for my DS. He has always been leadership and service oriented but was unsure as to his direction. A Service Academy had never entered any college discussion with...

Will my MCL and ACL injury heal in time?

HaHa. OK, I’ll limit it too medical advice on this board. Just didn’t want to see a young candidate led astray.

Will my MCL and ACL injury heal in time?

To THParent: I am not an orthopedist. So you didn’t “take a dump in my Cheerios”. (But nice language though). I am a radiologist and specialize in MR sports injuries. I interpret MRs from 5 different Otho groups. And the OP said that whoever evaluated him said his ACL felt comparatively “loose”...

Will my MCL and ACL injury heal in time?

I guarantee the MR has a final report. Almost all are read same day. He can get a copy of the final report as well as the disc with the images from the site it was performed.

Will my MCL and ACL injury heal in time?

@THParent , Sorry, but that may be the worst advice I have ever read. The only part of your comment with which I agree is to get a second opinion if needed. Please tell me that you are not a medical professional. I have read tens of thousads of MSK MRs for over 30 different orthopedist. I...

    Fat Leonard Navy Scandal (WaPost)

Capt MJ and Jcleppe, Those are very thoughtful replies. Having hit 50 I realize that no man-run institution is beyond reproach. I have been in the medical field for 30 years and have seen the Good and the Bad in this honorable profession. I guess some of us in civilian life view the military as...
