    NROTC MO Essay #1 Review

My son was also unable to think of an example of a time he had to sacrifice his success for the good of a group when he got that question in his interview. He was worried about that but thought the rest of the interview went very well. He did get the scholarship so I don’t think it’s a...

    NROTC questions?

When my son applied it came down to an honest assessment of his strengths. His SAT was strong, but he didn’t have as high of a GPA as he could have. Also, his strengths lean way more toward physical fitness and leadership than academics. He was never going to excel in a Tier 1 or 2 major. So...

    NROTC Marine Option

My son contacted the local recruiter before submitting the application but they did not help all that much. I think the amount of assistance you receive varies depending on which office you’re dealing with. Before submitting the app online he dropped a copy off with the recruit guy, who just...

    Finalization Of NROTC App

Have you already done the PFT or are those practice scores? My son did the PFT on the same day as his officer interview after he submitted his application is the only reason I’m asking. Anyway, I believe you can take it again and I would suggest doing so if you are going Marine Option. Try to...

    Boys State

My son attended in Illinois and he ran for and was elected as Mayor of his town and then Sheriff of his County. They held smaller, local elections first and then moved up to the larger ones so that it was possible to run for more than one office.

    Boys State

My son did attend in a different State — he was only selected as an alternate in our State and also the dates conflicted with his sister’s wedding so we sent him to another State where his grandfather had once been heavily involved in Boys State. In that State (IL) it was possible because you...

    Improving NROTC Application

My son had similar questions about Boys State before he went last summer. He ended up loving it. You’ll get out of it what you put into it. Run for leadership positions and be involved when you’re there. It will end up being a great experience regardless of where you end up attending college...

Countdown to I-Day... How do you say "good bye" ?

Sigh. It’s so hard to be out here in Cali with a kid going across the country. My son will be at VMI, which sometimes feels only accessible by helicopter, and we too must choose carefully which events we can attend. It’s starting to hit me now that the admissions/scholarship stresses are over...

    High School Award Ceremony

My DS is normally the poster child for avoiding special recognition, but I have to say that getting that big cardboard check at awards night was pretty special and something he won't likely ever forget. Many of his friends did not even know about the scholarship and there were quite a few...

    High School Award Ceremony

Our school dropped the ball a bit and did not contact us as to when the award night was even planned, but normally they do request that the student reach out to the appropriate contact person or people to coordinate a presentation. In our case we lucked out because unbeknownst to either me or my...

    USNA or MIT

@kinnem lol at #5. That is something I would do. It’s so hard to let them go, even though at the end of the day that’s our job.

NMMI as prep for Citadel, VMI, TAMU?

I would not discount VMI for him. If he takes the SAT more than once you might be surprised at the improvement. My son raised is score 110 points the second time around. His GPA was not stellar either, but he played sports, went to to Boys State, etc... to add to his application. But I think a...

    Marine Option - 2nd Board

My son was interviewed for second board and he received notification of his scholarship on March 26.

New here. DS is a Junior in HS attending NASS18

I believe that Illinois (and possibly other states) will accept anyone who applies as long as you pay for it. It is worth it any way you can swing it. DS loved it (though going in he wasn’t sure he would) and thought it was a really valuable experience.

    NROTC vs. Enlisting then Commissioning

Agree 100% with the above. They gave my son the same song and dance, and said you need a good back up plan and this is it. Luckily his Dad was a Marine and knew that speech for exactly what it was. In fact he told my son what they would say verbatim before son spoke with them. DS applied for...

When should my teachers expect an email?

I'm not sure if there are differences between the Navy and Marine options, but my DS was Marine option, and I don't believe his counselor, teachers or coach ever received any type of email after he submitted the application. He and I both assumed that they would receive an evaluation to submit...

    Navy ROTC Class of 2022

I feel you on this! DS has now banned me from reading anything in the DoDMERB section of this forum because it was stressing me out. Don’t worry she will be fine.

Why "no strenuous exercise for 48 hours" before DoD exam?

@2022mom Excellent! Congratulations to you both.

Why "no strenuous exercise for 48 hours" before DoD exam?

This is my worst nightmare. Thank you. I am going to have him change the appointment to a Monday so he can just take the weekend off.
