I am trying to plan a flight home after the A-Day parade and visit with our hopefully-to-be-cadet. What time do you estimate we will be leaving the Academy. How long is the drive to the COS airport?
DS received the Falcon Foundation scholarship letter today. Any advice about the various schools?
What if son turns it down (I know, I know)? He isn't understanding that it is an honor, looking at it like "second best".
Can someone explain how and when one is chosen for either prep school and/or Falcon Scholars?
I understand that prep school is often used to bring enlisted, athletes, etc. up to academic speed, but what if you are "qualified no vacancy"?
Have the Falcon Scholars already been chosen or is...
If you reapply to the academy, we know that it is a big plus. One question, though. How do the ROTC units view this--spending a year in their program then leaving? Should you tell your commander of your plans?
Curious how many of you appointees/candidates are planning to major in engineering. Does the academy prefer that, or is it a non issue? I know all take 18 hrs of engineering, anyway.
My son is still waiting to hear from service academy, but looking to do rotc as backup. There has been a terrible problem with the ROTC office with lost forms, etc. so he still has not gone up in front of the board. If he does not get a scholarship, how does one go about participating in ROTC...
Hi, do new cadets have to fill out medical forms like those entering civilian colleges? To verify vaccination, etc? With the going over DS got from Dodmerb, I can't imagine he needs another physical, but will make an appointment if forms from doc will be required.
Can one of you wonderfully knowledgeable folks lay out the timeline for admissions going forward? We are now coming to the end of the nomination process, so are the admissions folks looking at LOA's first, then principals then "regular" nominees? Or are they all piled in a big stack that is...
How common is it for applicants to find out about a nomination from the Academy application site? DS checked his status and it noted that nomination was received from our congresswoman--but no notification from her yet. I figured that they tell the academies before they generate letters.
We...
My younger son is entering hs next year and is deciding on a language. Chinese is offered and he is leaning toward taking that. I assume this is a plus to the service academies?
How does the selection process compare at the Academy versus the MOCs? I assume the MOC nomination is statistically harder to get than the appointment? And of course the Senators are more competitive than the congresspeople. Therefore, if you are a competitive nomination candidate with a...
What kinds of things have people written about for their "ethical or moral dilemma" essay? Son wanted to write about helping a friend who was experimenting with alcohol and drugs, how he stuck by him, got him to hang with another crowd, helped him realize what a mistake he was making. But I...
My son is debating who to go to for his final recommendation. He has teachers and a coach, but has raised the question whether a peer rec would be a good idea. His AOL said in the interview that the Academy likes to see strong friendships, so I guess that's where this is coming from.
I...
My son's robotics team was featured in a front page article in our newspaper (big city daily, not a small local paper), including a photo of him as driver.
The article describes this extra-curricular very well, and brings out the achievements of the team.
Is it okay to include this, say...
Does anyone know how the USAFA recalculates GPA? My son has about a 3.4, but his school is incredibly competitive (small prep school, 50 in his class he is about 12th or 13th). He has all A's and B's, but obviously mostly B's. He has consistently taken the highest math and science available...
The application from our Senator includes an "extracurriculars and honors" form. Son thinks that mean only school honors and activities apply. I say put everything you do on there! He was accepted into competitive engineering summer sessions, won competitions there and participates in sports...
