A-Day and Parents Weekend - Cancelled for sure?

According to an email today: " Team USAFA, In order to keep our cadets and personnel healthy and safe under COVID-19 conditions, participation will look different for several traditional Summer and Fall events at USAFA this year. Below is an outline of the status of such events. Marches Back...

    Hand Injury

You will have to be carrying a lot of things in your left hand on I-day...but if it's your right palm that is injured, you should be okay. PT shouldn't start for 2-3 days or so after you get there to allow for some acclimation if I remember correctly. With COVID, it might be even longer until...

Squadrons just released through the portal site

Aggressors lead the way! Squads 1-5 are pretty great, and in a great location in Vandy Tower. Good luck to your daughter!

    Personal Items

Wow, I guess they updated the CS&D! We were only allowed 2 personal items last year as doolies. AFrpaso is correct- watches, headphones, etc would not count towards the personal item limit. Big items that you cannot fit inside your trunk or in overhead storage would count- like skis...

Government issued ticket has me arriving the day of BCT?

In the past, report times staggered from 0700-1100, and that was without the social distancing (AKA we all could stand in lines right next to each other and be super close). I wouldn't be surprised if they have to stagger the times out even more this year given the current situation. There is no...

    Boots for BCT

I'll just add that the issued boots are super heavy and pretty uncomfortable since they haven't been broken in at all. Wearing them pretty much makes your feet miserable, so the majority of people buy and break in their own pair to wear to I-Day. Having lighter boots just makes BCT life a lot...

    Any News?

I totally understand why you might be anxious- I would just keep in mind that everyone applying for 2025 is in the same boat as you. Things might be getting delayed, but they are getting delayed for all applicants, so don't feel like you are getting behind! Also, having a presidential nomination...

    Any News?

The "candidate phase" doesn't start until July 1st for the next application cycle anyways. Typically, applicants get promoted to candidate status in the order their pre-candidate questionnaire was received and processed. After you are promoted to Candidate status, you will have exactly 4 months...

Are there private places to practice instruments?

I've never heard of a squad prohibiting a guitar- pretty sure you are allowed to have that since everyone is allowed 1 large personal item in their room (like skis or guitars). Just check with your squad after BCT ends to be sure. :)

    Preparation for change in elevation

START HYDRATING! Seriously though, being dehydrated is really the worst in general, but especially at 7000 feet. Definitely take every chance that the cadre give you to hydrate, and don't be afraid to report in and ask if you and your classmates can hydrate freely, haha.

    Admissions Essays - Reapplicant

That said ^ , I recommend that you write new essays for each of the topics, no matter how strong they were the first time so that you can show your growth and development since the first time you applied.

SS and other Summer Programs Canceled

Hey all- I wanted to give a heads up about the summer programs that have been canceled so far at USAFA. This slide is from the Supt's All call today. If you got into summer seminars, expect Admissions to reach out about refunds and all that sometime soon.

What kind of material is on the spanish validation test?

If you took Spanish 5 in high school and did relatively well, you should be good to go. I was able to validate through 221 even though admittedly I fell asleep during the last 10 or so minutes of the test. For 2023, we took the test in one of the lectinars after eating lunch and everyone was...

Any long term thing to do to improve my chances?

Leadership opportunities. That's the biggest thing that sets people apart. Show the Academy that you've made a positive impact in your community, sports team, church, whatever it might be. You're going into high school- get plugged into some clubs that you're passionate about and if there aren't...

    Summer Seminar Essay Question

I think the character count is 2000, which would be around 400 words. I'd double check that if I was you. I'd be surprised if the word count was that long. Good luck!

    Summer Seminar Academics

Even if they don't explicitly ask for that specific math class, you should still put down whatever math classes you've taken and the grade you got. A lot of high schools have different names for similar courses. For example, I had an algebra 2 class that covered trigonometry, but wasn't called...

    Validation exams for foreign language

Yep, if you validate the 100 level classes, the 2 required semesters, then you don't have to take any language classes during your time at USAFA. Most cadets choose to take a language anyways though and get the minor. Having a minor in certain defense languages leads to a slightly higher officer...

USAFA Class of 2024 Appointment Thread

It could be a call from your congressman, an email telling to check your portal, random portal update without an email, or they could send you something in the mail, but I don't think they've done that in a while. Sometimes the Congress critters will notify you first, and then you'll get the...

    Validation exams for foreign language

@THmom Over the summer, I don't think we got to choose more than one, but at some point there will be an opportunity for cadets to try to validate more languages if they want. I know someone who validated into French and Russian 300 level courses for their doolie year, so I know it's possible. I...

    Validation exams for foreign language

For 2023, we took language validation tests during the first part of BCT. We got to choose what language we wanted to try to validate, and we also got to put in preferences for what language we wanted to take during the ac year. If you did well, you were more likely to get to take that language...
