    Graduated but not commissioned.

Thanks! Your instincts are 100% right. He needs to handle it, but your counsel can be a huge help. In my son's case, he waited almost 2 years for NSTC to complete the disenrollment process. A question I didn't think to ask, but did he go on his First Class cruise last summer? If he didn't, I'll...

    Graduated but not commissioned.

Sorry to hear this, and I'm sure it's a disappointment. We just went through this with our son, and there is a light at the end of the tunnel - so hang in there. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but this is par for the course with the Navy. They will allow you to commission if you run into...

    NROTC Scholarship LOA

Thank you for the well-wishes. He is in a great place with the Navy's decision. The quality of officer he was exposed to was eye opening for sure, but he now sees it as an opportunity to learn how *not* to lead. Sometimes a negative example can be more powerful than a positive one. As for the...

    NROTC Scholarship LOA

One last post to bring everyone up to date and provide a little close-out to those that have asked. But first I want to re-iterate my thanks to those here who've wished us well in our loss and helped to guide us through this nightmare of a process. My son is set to graduate in May with a BS in...

    NROTC Scholarship LOA

Thanks for the condolences. Good days and bad, but this certainly isn't helping. He hasn't received the PNS's decision yet, and he's drafting a response now. We decided against an attorney, because my son feels that if the facts of this case aren't compelling enough for the PNS to decide in his...

    NROTC Scholarship LOA

He's certainly disappointed, and is working on his response as we speak. Thanks again for the info. Interestingly, he didn't receive a copy of the summarized testimony. His verbal testimony wasn't even specifically referenced as an enclosure, only his written statement. Perhaps all of of that is...

    NROTC Scholarship LOA

UPDATE: PRB just returned their recommendations and it read "Disenrollement with Recoupment." No LOA mentioned at all. Looks like all eggs are now in the PNS's basket. Hopefully we can get him to either A) go against his Board's recommendation and put my son on LOA so he can bring his grade up...

    NROTC Scholarship LOA

Thanks, gentlemen. All good insights. As an FYI, his class advisor told him the PRB findings should be arriving today via FedEx. Which, I assume, means we'll have until next Friday (5 full business days?) to draft his letter to the PNS. He does still want to commission, and has a plan to elevate...

    NROTC Scholarship LOA

Good to know, thanks. Out of curiosity, how common is it for a MIDN to get a 1 or 2 on his/her DD785 following a simple academic (not behavioral/moral) disenrollment?

    NROTC Scholarship LOA

Thanks, GD. This is very helpful. Per your question "You mention above that with the completion of the proposed summer course, his GPA would be ~2.65. Does that mean his current cumulative GPA is below 2.5?" Yes. His current cum GPA is 2.3. However, he feels confident he can achieve A's as his...

    NROTC Scholarship LOA

Thanks, Herman. Truly appreciate it. Good info, and a lot to unpack. Kind of shocked at the poor leadership and concern for sailors displayed by the PRB members (not how we did it in the Army anyway), but our primary concern right now is that this same command not force him out of college and...

    NROTC Scholarship LOA

Thanks much. It's been a tough road, and this certainly isn't helping, but we're taking it day by day. Cheers.

    NROTC Scholarship LOA

Good afternoon, all. My youngest son is a NROTC scholarship MIDN (ME major) at VMI going into his 2/C year. This past year we lost his oldest brother in a tragic accident, and it hit my youngest son pretty hard. He struggled this year with the loss, and while he's in a better place now, he...

Ask Me Anything: Rat at Virginia Military Institute

How is holiday/furlough travel usually sorted out? Do cadets usually fly out from one airport over another (e.g. Richmond vs DCA or IAD)? Is there usually a shuttle that runs to the airport, or do cadets grab an uber/cab?

Ask Me Anything: Rat at Virginia Military Institute

Ahh, OK. Thanks. At least now I know. Can't imagine what it must cost to make those uniforms, then ;-) Cheers.

Ask Me Anything: Rat at Virginia Military Institute

Having an oddly difficult time finding the answer to these questions, but it's probably hiding in plain sight; do cadets own their uniforms, or is the $2,700 fee a rental? is it a recurring fee every year (3rd, 2nd, 1st class years)? Thanks in advance.

Questions from the Incoming Rat Mass of 2020+3?

Appreciate the insights. He actually chose VMI over the Service Academies because he wanted a truly spartan experience coupled with the tradition. He got offers to play elsewhere and picked VMI, so fingers crossed, but I think he's going in with a good mindset. Thanks again for all the info. Cheers.

Questions from the Incoming Rat Mass of 2020+3?

My son will be reporting to VMI this summer with an NROTC scholarship, and a spot on the soccer team. Any insights on how life is easier/harder/different for rat athletes amongst all the other pre-breakout chaos?

    3 year upgraded to a 4 year!!!

How did you make that happen? My son got a 4-year NROTC, but only a 3-year AROTC. We didn't even know this was possible.

AROTC 3rd board results are posted!

Final results for my DS: USCGA - No (turns out they were not entirely truthful when they said they want "well rounded leaders and athletes...not just good GPAs") AROTC - 3 year scholarship to VMI or Benedictine College + athletic money (he only applied to the third board due to a later decision...
