USNA Class of 2028 Waiting and Speculating

Reality isn't that different with other top tier schools. Oldest who is an off the charts math guy got deferred EA than rejected at MIT. Would it have been nicer for them to just reject him in December instead of waiting until March? Of course. He got a regular decision courtesy wait list...

USNA Class of 2028 Waiting and Speculating

Mistakes happen. I spent a year at NAPS because of a clerical error with my medical (in the paper days....). Definitely worth a call to dig deeper.

USNA Class of 2028 Waiting and Speculating

My late father-in-law served with Queen Victoria's Own Madras Sappers & Miners in Burma during 1944/1945. The colonial days when the Indian Army still had British officers.

Hangout: USNA Induction Day / I-Day Class of 2028: Thursday 27 June 2024

To this day, I'm convinced that the script writers for "Coming to America" spent time in the 8th Wing barbershop in the early 80s. My grandfather was a professional featherweight boxer in NYC in the late 30s. Watched all kinds of old fights with him as a kid on black & white 8mm. Mr. Johnson...

Many MOC offices have a staffer who is responsible for the service academy nomination process. If you are that curious, you can always call that person to see if they will give you any color on the number of applicants for each service academy for say the past three years. Draw your own...

    Does High School History matter?

A single data point, but one of my middle son's HS classmates was a total disaster as a USNA plebe (didn't make it through the year and from all reports has continued to spiral in the wrong direction). Has had no impact on the school's ability to place qualified candidates in the intervening years.

Are the Laws of the Navy still plebe knowledge? This stanza is good lifelong advice: Take heed what ye say of your seniors, Be your words spoken softly or plain, Lest a bird of the air tell the matter, And so ye shall hear it again.

    bad sophomore semester

I'd say 50-60% of the nomination applicants that I see for my MOC have a STEM "hole" like this on their transcript. Have a good explanation for what happened, lessons learned, and how you developed strategies to improve. And as @usna1985 said, do everything that you can to have As/high Bs for...

    Separation

Your recollection is correct. The "buy back" price was at a steep discount. The Tailor Shop made some good vig on the resale of the used items. There was also the ubiquitous "GOOB" sale of smaller ticket items. I still remember a 2/C from my Company buying old socks from me at my going out of...

    USNA vs Ivy Alumni

No one is dismissing the obvious. What I thought the question pertained to is: "Is the network really willing to help a brother out". My personal sample is not typical (USNA non-grad and Wharton MBA), but in my 35+ years on Wall Street, I've seen a marked difference between the two in the...

    USNA vs Ivy Alumni

I was a supernumerary member of a work colleague's Harvard undergrad poker game in NYC. A lot of ultimately very successful guys (US Attorney, Goldman Sachs partner, prominent magazine editor), but geez, what a miserable group of #%@* to be around. As @Old Navy BGO knows first hand, I have...

Taking a lot of heat for choosing USNA over Stanford.

My own mother told me I was crazy for choosing NAPS to USNA over ROTC at Johns Hopkins. She got over it and I'm still in the will.

I don't want to be in the academy anymore, but I also cant leave

+1 on the sticking out the year if at all possible. I left mid-term second semester Youngster year. I could have gutted it out and grabbed the credits, but I didn't. Came back to bite me when pre-reqs and transfer credits were evaluated at the new school. Lots of time until transfer school...

    Youngest son

It's good to keep some balance. My oldest a very STEM guy - a 2x state math champ, accelerated in science, the works. A very heavy academic load junior & senior year of HS. Loved playing 3rds soccer in the fall (a level below JV), ski racing in the winter and varsity tennis in the spring...
